Facebook's Messenger app continues to morph right before our eyes into something that is no longer just your standard online messaging tool. Now, it has Doodle Draw, the first ever true game that is directly integrated into Messenger's fabric.
Before, Facebook only allowed content generating apps, such as those that help users make GIFs and sound effects, onto the Messenger Platform. Among these apps, Talking Tom was the nearest thing to a game. But upon closer inspection, it was actually just a tool that allows users to select a cartoon avatar to deliver their video messages for them.
Facebook had launched its Messenger Platform back in March of this year to provide users with content making tools and business to business communication capabilities. But even before the social media giant had launched the Messenger Platform, it was already considering incorporating games into Messenger. Just last month, this was echoed by a report made by The Information.
As for the first game in its portfolio, Doodle Draw, it is as simple as it gets. And those who are familiar with Draw Something, that other mobile game that was acquired by Zynga for a hefty price, will no doubt have no qualms about where Doodle Draw draws inspiration from.
But if you are not familiar with any of it, just know that Doodle Draw lets you draw or scribble (with a few choice of colors) certain things they suggested, and then send it to a friend. The friends who get it will have to guess what your drawing is (or they can try, with potentially hilarious or embarrassing results). You can earn points by playing in order to purchase more colors.
To download Doodle Draw, you have just have to tap the three dot button in the Messenger app, then get it from the platform app list.
As simple as it may be, Doodle Draw is the perfect game for the Messenger app. After all, the dynamics of the game depends wholly on its social aspect, e.g. in order to play, users will have to connect with friends. If Facebook can think of more games that capitalizes on messaging and other social dynamics, not only can it bring more fun to the whole Facebook experience, but also achieve its goal of optimum user engagement (keeping users inside Facebook for as long as it can).
The only downside is: Doodle Draw can be a bit spammy if unchecked. Facebook will have to strike a balance between optimizing user engagement or making things annoying for its users.
