Google has announced the official release of Android 5.0 Lollipop, the newest version of the most widely used mobile operating system in the whole world. Formerly referred to as Android L, the latest Android OS will be debuting in no less than three Nexus products, namely the Nexus 6 smartphone, the Nexus 9 tablet, and the Nexus Player media streaming device. In the following weeks, Android 5.0 Lollipop will also be made available in the Nexus 5, the Nexus 7, the Nexus 10, and Google Play Edition devices.
Perhaps the most interesting new feature of Android 5.0 Lollipop is Material Design, the collection of improvements on the mobile operating system's interface and visual design. The newest Android OS version now sports smoother animations, a cleaner and more bold-colored look, an overhauled multi-tasking menu, and voice interaction capabilities. Some of the newer aspects of Material Design can be seen in the latest updates that Google has made for its own Android apps (like Google+, for example). The overall aim of the new Material Design is provide a more unified, consistent design and identity to Android, whether it is used on a smartphone, a tablet, a media streaming device, or any other mobile handset.
Visual aesthetics aside, Android 5.0 Lollipop has more than 5,000 new application program interfaces (APIs), which means developers should have a field day tapping into them and exploring more ways to enhance the Android user's experience.
Also, Android 5.0 Lollipop should be able to sync apps, images, music, and even recent searches more smoothly across various Android devices. The new Android system also comes with new notification controls (for managing alerts better), a battery-saving mode that can add an hour of battery life or more between charges, multiple users account capability (including guest user mode), and new methods of protecting your handset and data (courtesy of Bluetooth connections).
Android 5.0 Lollipop even has a nifty feature called Factory Reset Protection, which prevents your device from being restored to its factory settings. This will prove to be handy in protecting your device from thieves who want to reset your phone to default when it gets stolen.
A lot of the features mentioned above can be found in other Android devices. But now with the Android 5.0 Lollipop release, Google is taking pains to incorporate them as core features of any Android-run handset.
