In spite of some hitches -- the US Apple Online store was down until 3 AM Pacific Time and reportedly there were issues encountered when pre-ordering via the Apple Store app -- Apple has set a new record for iPhone orders when it opened the pre-order period for the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus last night.
As told to Re/code by an Apple representative, overnight sales of the new iPhone versions have hit record levels. However, Re/code was quick to note that the phone maker giant did not mention exactly how many units have been sold.
Exact sales figures notwithstanding, other parties are chiming in on Apple's record initial roll-out. One of them is AT&T executive Ralph de la Vega, who shared his thoughts about the iPhone 6 launch during the very recent Goldman Sachs Communacopia Conference. As reported by Fierce Wireless, de la Vega cited the "amazing" volume of the orders so far. He further commented about how the demand for the new iPhones was significantly better than last year's.
As mentioned earlier in this article, the pre-order period was not without its hitches. Numerous users reported errors in the Apple Store app when they tried to pre-order their iPhones using the app. Even the websites of carriers experienced some issues with the pre-ordering process. Even Apple's own store was not immune -- it was down until about 3 AM Pacific Time, which is almost three hours after pre-orders became available in the Apple Store.
Moreover, it appears that the iPhone 6 Plus is going to incur some shortage of supply, with shipping time estimates shifted to 7 to 10 days (for both iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus) before the online store was up, shortly after there were reports that the shipping times slipped further to 3 to 4 weeks.
Apple seems unfazed. And despite the hurdles now, it looks like there are still plenty of models made available for delivery on September 19, the date in which the new iPhone devices officially hit stores everywhere.
As for those who failed to send their pre-orders -- well, they can always line up at the nearest Apple Store a few days from now. And those who successfully pre-ordered their iPhones? There is nothing left to do except watch the days go by.
