Samsung announced two new devices today -- the Galaxy A5 and the Galaxy A3. These smartphones both feature metallic unibodies and the slimmest dimensions of any handset Samsung has ever produced.
For years, the South Korean phone maker has been rather fond of manufacturing smartphones with plastic frames. But recently, Samsung has been starting to go metallic. As a matter of fact, more than two months ago, the mobile manufacturer unveiled the sleek, metal-framed Galaxy Alpha. At the time of its release, Samsung had stated that the Galaxy Alpha would be the first of many future metallic smartphones from the South Korean phone maker.
And it appears the company is making good on its word. Both the Galaxy A5 and the Galaxy A3 feature metallic unibodies that come in a variety of colors. Users can choose from Midnight Black, Pearl White, Platinum Silver, Soft Pink, Light Blue, and Champagne Gold.
But what really makes the Galaxy A5 and the Galaxy A3 distinctive is their ultra-thin sizes. Coming in at 6.7 millimeters and 6.9 millimeters, respectively, the two smartphones are the thinnest smartphones the South Korean phone maker has ever manufactured. By comparison, Apple's slimmest offerings, the iPhone 6, is 6.9 millimeters thin, while the iPhone 6 Plus is 7.1 millimeters thin.
Thinness is hardly the only basis of a device's appeal to buyers, but there are users who may actually want their smartphones to be super-slim. Fortunately, the Galaxy A5 and the Galaxy A3 have something to offer other than their shiny metal bodies and slim figures.
Among the two, the Galaxy A5 may have the better specs. It comes with a 5-inch HD Super AMOLED display screen, as well as a 13-megapixel camera on the rear and a 5-megapixel camera on the front.
Its hardware consists of a 1.2 GigaHertz Quad Core processor, and boasts 2 gigabytes of random access memory (RAM) and 16 gigabytes of internal memory, plus a micro SD slot that can support up to 64 gigabytes of additional storage. It has a 2,300 mAh battery and runs on Android 4.4 KitKat.
As for the Galaxy A3, it features a 4.5-inch qHD Super AMOLED display screen, and also has two cameras: an 8-megapixel rear camera and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera. The device uses the same processor as the Galaxy A5, with a RAM of 1 gigabyte and 16 gigabytes of internal storage (also with a micro SD slot). It packs a 1,900 mAh battery and like the Galaxy A5, also runs on Android 4.4 KitKat.
Samsung stated that both the new Galaxy devices will be launched in selected markets in November of this year. Although pricing information for both phones are not available yet, many expect them to be positioned by Samsung as midrange devices, but with premium-like features.
