It appears so. Recent reports suggest that the South Korean phone maker is currently busy exploring the idea of a smartphone with a pair of curving panels on its right and left sides.
Last year, Samsung introduced the Galaxy Note Edge, the smartphone that made waves several months ago with its unique design that features a display screen that curves to one side. This time, the company is developing an even better version with two curved sides, and it is possible that the tech giant will be positioning this new product as a variant to its next flagship device.
This interesting development was reported by SamMobile, which has proven to be a rather reliable news source for Samsung's fans. According to the website, the project does not have an official device name attached to it yet, but for the sake of identification, SamMobile has named the unreleased device the Galaxy S6 Edge.
Just as the Galaxy Note Edge was a variant of the Galaxy Note 4, many expect Samsung to push the S6 Edge as a variant to the South Korean phone maker's next flagship device, the Galaxy S6.
If the Galaxy S6 Edge does indeed see the light of day, it will be a most logical improvement on the current Galaxy Note Edge. For all its clever design, the Galaxy Note Edge is mostly advantageous only to right-handed users -- indeed, left-handed users would find its design a little awkward.
But with a second curved side panel, it would prove handy for all types of users, regardless of their right- or left-handedness. As reported by SamMobile, the Galaxy S6 Edge will be utilizing the same panel-based system used on the Galaxy Note Edge. This means that it will have all the panels that house news apps, sports apps, contacts, pedometer, favorite apps, and other shortcut icons.
On the software side, the Galaxy S6 Edge will likely take after the Note Edge, but with a few differences and some enhancements though. With the S6 Edge, users will be able to activate the main edge panel on the right or left curve, whichever side they are comfortable to.
There is also Glance Lighting, a feature that will see the Edge area light up when users receive a call or get alerts and notifications when they turn over their device. On top of that, users will also get to choose which of their favorite contacts will be displayed on the Edge area, and even assign specific colors for each contact.
Samsung has not confirmed anything yet, but there is no doubt that fans of the tech giant are already getting excited about this new upcoming product.
