The Xperia Z5 and Xperia Z5 Compact smartphones have been made available by Sony in European regions and other markets for a number of months now. However, the Japanese tech giant has not launched these two flagship devices yet in the United States. That is about to change as the company recently revealed that the Xperia Z5 and the Xperia Z5 Compact will be hitting the US market unlocked on February 7th of this year by way of Amazon, Best Buy, and B&H. The handsets will come with a price of $599 and $499, respectively.
A few readers may be wondering how Sony is only going through Amazon, Best Buy, and B&H in releasing its flagship devices in American shores. Shouldn’t the mobile manufacturer be courting wireless carriers instead? Well, the fact of the matter is wireless carriers in the US are not that into pushing smartphones produced by Sony. Indeed, it is quite mind boggling how a company as big as Sony is having a hard time penetrating the smartphone market in America, considering that it is a global brand. Adding to the frustration is that its devices actually garner solid reviews from the industry and critics.
Its history is certainly riddled with failed or arrested attempts to establish a presence in the US smartphone market. For instance, some may remember that Verizon Wireless, the biggest wireless carrier in the US, once launched an exclusive variant of Sony’s Xperia Z4 smartphone (the Xperia Z4v). After four months, both companies decided to discontinue the launch. And although Sony was able to partner with T-Mobile in selling its Xperia Z1S device, the wireless carrier has since made it clear that it has no plans of pushing any Sony mobile devices for now.
With so little attention from wireless carriers in the United States, Sony may have no other choice left but to do an unlocked launch. Well, at least it is something. As for those who do have plans to buy any one of the Xperia Z5 and Xperia Z5 Compact devices, they may actually be in for a treat. Both smartphones come with a 23 megapixel camera and a secondary 5 megapixel camera, Sony’s trademark waterproofing and dust resistance capabilities (an IP68 rating overall), and a fingerprint scanner. Inside, the devices feature an eight core Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 chip set and the Adreno 430 graphics processing unit (GPU).
