An eagerly expected change to iOS 13 will delight users in its simplicity. Apple’s newest iteration of its mobile operating system introduces Dark Mode to the interface of the iPhone and the iPad. It’s like the Dark Mode introduced last year on Apple’s desktop operating system, Mojave.
When Dark Mode is enabled, elements of the operating system’s interface that were previously white are now a black or dark gray. Text on the screen is now brighter. This increases the text’s clarity and puts less strain on the user’s eyes at night. Tests have also shown that this neat feature can also extend the life of the phone’s battery by up to 30 percent.
Here are 3 ways to switch to Dark Mode on both the iPhone and the iPad:
Siri is the simplest way to turn on Dark Mode. To do this, the user says, “Hey, Siri, turn on Dark Mode”. The user can also say, “Hey Siri, turn on Dark Appearance.” Siri will quickly make the switch and say, “Okay, I turned on Dark Mode” or “Okay, I turned on Dark Appearance.”
Turning Dark Mode or Dark Appearance off is simple. All the user needs to say is, “Hey Siri, turn off Dark Mode” or “Hey Siri, turn off Dark Appearance”. The switch is instant.
While not super convenient, the second easiest way to turn Dark Mode on is via the iPhone or iPad’s Control Center. Control Center can be opened by swiping down from the upper-right corner of the screen. The Brightness indicator is the icon with the sun. Hold it down until the full-screen interface shows up. When it does, the user will see an option for Dark Mode on the lower left-hand portion of the screen. Press the Dark Mode toggle and the user’s phone will switch to Dark Mode immediately.
The user has the option to cut out a step in this process by adding a shortcut to the Control Center. To do this, the user goes to Settings > Control Center > Customize Controls. Under the More Controls section, the user will see Dark Mode. By tapping the green plus sign, the operating system will add Dark Mode to the Control Center interface.
The user can now turn on Dark Mode by accessing Control Center and pressing the Dark Mode icon. The Dark Mode icon is a half black, half white circle. When Dark Mode is on, the left-hand portion of the circle is black.
Turning on Dark Mode through the operating system’s Settings app doesn’t take much more time. Just open the Settings app and tap the Display and Brightness section down near the bottom of the screen. Two layouts are shown at the top of the screen: Light and Dark. Tapping Dark will immediately turn on Dark Mode. Below this section, the user will see a toggle option for Automatic. If the toggle is flipped to green, Dark Mode will automatically switch on between sunrise and sunset. If Automatic is turned on, another feature labeled Options shows up just beneath it. If the user presses Options, they are presented with two choices: Sunset to Sunrise or Custom Schedule. By clicking Custom Schedule, they can set the times for when Light Mode is turned on as well as for when they’d like Dark Mode activated. The default setting for Light Appearance is 7:00am while Dark Appearance is turned on at 10:00pm.
