Samsung Focus vs. iPhone 4 Speed Test – Browser Battle!

The Apple iPhone has been the hot smartphone ticket for a couple of years but competitors are working hard to close the gap. The Samsung Focus is a Windows Phone 7 device that runs on the same AT&T network as the iPhone, and the Focus features a distinctive user interface in a sleek and visually pleasing package.

One of the primary uses of any smart phone is browsing the Internet, so comparisons of browsing speed can be helpful to isolate a possible factor in a purchase decision. To conduct this Internet browser speed test, we used the Wirefly Learn page for Windows Phones, a page that neither of the tested phones had ever visited. Also, both phones connected to the Internet using only AT&T Wireless’ 3G network. The Samsung Focus uses Microsoft’s Internet Explorer Mobile for its browser, while the Apple iPhone used Apple’s Safari browser.

The result: The Samsung Focus was a clear winner, showing the complete page before the iPhone, but the iPhone seemed to complete loading all the page data a bit before the Focus finished. For a closer look at the test, click on the video on the right.

T-Mobile Unveils HTC HD7 – Largest Windows Phone in U.S.

T-Mobile threw its hat into the Windows Phone 7 ring as well today with the announcement of the largest touchscreen Windows Phone, the HTC HD7. The phone is due to hit shelves in early and mid-November.

The HD7 looks to be the flagship Windows device. The phone will sport a mammoth 4.3-inch WVGA (800 x 480) TFT screen, a 1GHz Qualcomm® 1 processor, 576MB of RAM, and a 5 megapixel camera with dual-LED flash.

Additionally, from the TMO press release: “The HTC HD7 is also the first device to offer T-Mobile® Family Room™, a new application exclusively from T-Mobile that helps families keep in touch and manage their busy lives. Customers can write a note on a virtual chalkboard and add shared calendar events for their Family Room group to coordinate get-togethers. Sharing pictures and interacting is easy, with real-time notifications alerting users when any family member posts something for everyone to see.”

AT&T Announces 3 Windows Phone 7 Series for Under $200

AT&T unveiled its Windows Phone 7 series lineup at this morning’s Microsoft conference announcing the launch of nine Windows 7 phones set to hit the U.S. market this holiday season.

AT&T Mobility CEO Ralph de la Vega confirmed what has been reported for weeks now. AT&T Wireless will feature three Windows 7 phones in its lineup beginning November 8. All three phones will be priced at $199.99 with a 2-year contract agreement.

The phones are:

LG Quantum – The Quantum comes with a 1.3 GHz Snapdragon processor, a full QWERTY keyboard and DLNA support.

HTC Surround — The Surround is being billed as the phone for media and game enthusiasts. It comes with a 1 GHz Snapdragon processor, a 3.8-inch touchscreen, 2 Dolby surround sound speakers. Full touch-screen with a kickstand.

Samsung Focus – The focus also comes with 1 GHz Snapdragon processor, but sports a 4-inch Super AMOLED display and 8 GB on-board storage. It’s being billed as the thinnest Windows 7 phone in the U.S. market.

Dell Lightning leak gives Windows Phone 7 a pretty face

If Microsoft’s Kin didn’t quite light your fire, what the guys over at Engadget are calling “the mother of all Dell leaks” just might electrify your smartphone desires.

Meet the Dell Lightning, a decidedly sexy portrait slider set to be powered by Microsoft’s chic and minimalistic upcoming Windows Phone 7 operating system. Engadget managed to secure some slides detailing the slick device, and from the spec sheet, it looks like the Lightning will offer much more than a pretty face when it strikes Wirefly’s virtual shelves (perhaps sometime in Q4?). Here’s some highlights from the spec sheet:

AT&T and T-Mobile 3G

Microsoft outs social media-centric Kin UI, hipsters rejoice

Yesterday Microsoft outed Kin, a new user interface built off the Windows Phone 7 platform that puts social networking front and center and seemingly aims to be in the hands of each and every hipster from Brooklyn to Chicago — and from Alabama to Arkansas. The user interface, slated to grace the Verizon-bound Kin One and Kin Two phones in May, is focused on simplifying the process of sharing status updates, pictures and video, location and more with friends through popular social networks, email and messaging.

As can be seen in Microsoft’s curious if memorable hipster-featuring Kin advertising campaign, Microsoft’s two brand new slider phones will sport an innovative area at the bottom of the display dubbed “Kin Spot” where users can drag content ranging from photos and videos to web pages and locations to share easily with contacts.

Even if you’re not pursuing a career in the arts while living off your parent’s money, wearing tight black jeans, and railing against modern society while claiming that you’re in a band and adamantly denying that you’re a ‘hipster’, Microsoft’s Kin lineup may also appeal to you.

The two devices will feature “Kin Loop,” a home page stream reminiscent of Motorola’s MOTOBLUR user interface that aggregates and displays friend’s status updates from across social networks. The Kin One and Kin Two will also be the first phones to be equipped with Microsoft’s Zune music player and Zune Marketplace.

A unique feature called “Kin Studio” will allow users to automatically backup data across their phone and effectively relive memories by viewing an organized time line of events ranging from messages to pictures through an online web interface.

Microsoft’s My Phone Makes Official Debut, Offers Premium Service

Launching alongside Windows Mobile 6.5, Microsoft’s free My Phone service made its official debut today. Similar to Apple’s iPhone-compatible MobileMe service ($99/year), My Phone offers users the ability to backup content and access it online as well as save and share photos. A premium service ($5 for 7 days of access) offers subscribers a number of options to recover a lost device.

Windows Mobile users with My Phone will have the ability to automatically backup and access contacts, photos, videos, text messages, documents and other content through a Microsoft-hosted web site. If users lose or decide to replace a device, any backed up content can be restored to the new device.

The My Phone service also arms Windows Mobile phone users with the ability to send photos taken with their device directly to a PC, or share photos with Facebook, Flickr, MySpace, and Windows Live.

If you find yourself unexpectedly phone-less, you can opt to purchase seven days of My Phone Premium which will allow you to query your phone for its GPS location, ring the phone loudly even if it’s set to vibrate, lock the phone and display a custom message, or choose to wipe the phone’s data.

We were able ring our HTC Imagio while on silent and tempt the imaginary abductor with an enticing message promising a monetary reward, but no dice when it came to trying to get a GPS readout on the device. If our beloved Imagio was truly nowhere to be found, we would probably at least consider hitting up Microsoft for our seven bucks back.
