Am I Eligible for an AT&T Cell Phone Upgrade?

Not all AT&T Wireless customers may qualify for a cell phone upgrade. At this time, AT&T Wireless allows these customers to upgrade with no upgrade fee when they commit to a new 2-year contract:

  • AT&T customers who have had 24 months of cell phone service since activation of their cell phone or since their last phone upgrade.
  • Certain AT&T customers may be eligible for a cell phone upgrade even if they have been in their current plan for less than two years (24 months), if they commit to a new 2-year contract and meet these eligibility requirements:

    * Customer has had a standard calling plan plus data services costing at least $68.99 a month but no more than $98.99 a month, and who has been in contract (and not had a phone upgrade) for 21 months or more,
    or
    * Customer has had a standard calling plan plus data services costing $99 a month or more, and who has been in contract (and not upgraded) in the last 12 months.

  • A customer with a calling plan and data services of less than $69 who is 21 to 23 months into contract may upgrade for a fee and a commitment of an additional two-year service contract extension. No upgrade fee is assessed for any customers who are on a month-to-month agreement.

    Note that AT&T Wireless upgrade eligibility may be further limited based on customer’s usage history, payment record, previous phone replacement, etc. Upgrade eligibility is solely determined by AT&T Wireless at its discretion.

    Hello there,
    I was just wondering if I can get an upgrade on my phone while on a plan with my grandparents…am i eligible to make an upgrade or not?

    • Hi Jarrett,
      You need to make sure that you are an “Authorized User” on the account. If you are not than you will need to have your grandparents add you on with that access. If you have that status you should be able to process an upgrade on your phone.

    I am eligible for an upgrade an really interested in an android phone but don’t want to pay the fees. is it possible getting around this by just getting a free phone that at&t occasionally have?

      If your are calling “fees” the required data plan for using smartphones on a carries network than no there is not a way to get around them.

    • Jimmy, you should contact AT&T to ask that question. Wirefly doesn’t sell AT&T phones, so we can’t check you your upgrade eligibility.

    At times my phone breaks up and there is this sound that I can’t hear.

    • Yvonne, I don’t have enough information to help you, and it’s almost impossible to get enough information over the Internet to trouble-shoot an intermittent cell phone problem. Your best bet is to take the phone to one of the carrier’s stores (AT&T?) and have someone there check it.

    I disassembled my iPhone and then shoved all the various pieces into my cherry pop-tart this morning at breakfast. As soon as I got the last piece to fit inside the breakfast snack rang and vibrated across my plate, bumping my coffe mug and spilling a few drops onto the table. I picked the poptart up and gently sqeezed it. Squeezing caused some cherry filling to ooze out the perimeter of the tart, but also answered the call that caused the poptart to ring. The voice on the other end was a stranger who had called randomly just to test the phone he had just made by puttting the pieces of a dissambled Droid into a burrito.

    • Cool! At first I thought your story was half-baked, but now I think it’s neat that your Apple phone had cherry filling.

    uhm, so ATT is no longer apart of Wirefly? Why is that ?

    • AT&T had contracts with a number of online retailers, including Wirefly. In March 2011, AT&T decided not to renew those contracts, so all those online retailers stopped selling AT&T phones. We hope to get another agreement with AT&T but don’t have a timetable for that.

    I purchased my back flip through wirefly. I am paying a protection fee every month. If you no longer carry at&t what good is the protection plan? What do I need to do if I need this phone replaced. At&t tells me I do not have the insurance on this. So why am I paying wirefly?????

    • Deb, if you still have the Backflip and you have an MDPA coverage claim, you should visit MDPA to discuss your claim. If you’ve been paying the monthly MDPA cost, then you still have coverage, despite the fact that Wirefly does not sell AT&T phones. (Here’s a little secret: Wirefly’s parent company does the sales for other companies that *do* still sell AT&T, so we have AT&T phones in our warehouse.)

      You can switch your MDPA coverage to a new phone if you get one — contact MDPA to discuss that. And if you want to discontinue your MDPA coverage, let me know here and I’ll start the wheels turning on that.

    Recently my iPhone battery went bad, when I contacted AT&T and attempted to buy a replacement phone they said it would be an “upgrade” and since I wasn’t yet eligible for an “upgrade” it would be $400 and some change… So, I asked about just a standard phone, and again they said it would be an “upgrade”. I found the President’s email address and fired off an email to hime and two days later I’m getting a replacement iPhone for $49.00, no contract extension, nothing, nothing but good service. Hopefully from this point forward AT&T will change their model and stop calling everything that happens an “upgrade”.

  • I called a store in Bloomington, Illinois and they told me that there is no price difference in the store between anyone walking in off the street, and someone who is purchasing an upgrade as it is all the same price in the store. Is this really true. I get no special pricing as an ATT customer who has already been with them for 6 years?

    • Karl, I can’t really help you with prices in a carrier’s store, as that has nothing to do with Wirefly. I can say that Wirefly almost always has lower prices than you will find in a carrier’s store. However, Wirefly does not sell AT&T phones.

    my contract with you was on an att network….. now you don’t support att…. what a bunch of crooked resellers………!!!!!!!

    • Doug, when you buy a phone through Wirefly, the service always comes from the carrier (such as AT&T). Your contract is with the carrier, not with Wirefly. If you have any questions about your AT&T service, you can call AT&T or visit an AT&T store. That would have been the case whether or not Wirefly still sold AT&T devices.

      And we hope to be able to sell AT&T devices again in the future, so don’t rule that out.

  • Yes. Contract is a contract. But there is also something called as being humane and helping people.

    This may not have been her son’s fault. Accidents happen.

    And of course, you cannot expect everyone to spend extra cash on insurance right after a recession.

    I do not mean that everyone should get their way. But there are loyal customers who should have some kind of higher privilege in some matters (in a limited way).

    Good businesses are businesses which can keep their customers happy. When a customer is happy, he/she won’t mind spending a little more for some services (=profit for the company).

    Every good business owner knows that the best publicity is when its customers praise it and spread the word. And the best way to do that is to genuinely help customers – to look into their problems and help them out.

    By being rigid, AT&T only loses ground, popularity and customers.

    And now it is going to take over T-Mobile(I am their customer – a very happy one). If this leads to AT&T increasing the prices of T-mobile customers and imposing more restrictions, then I rather switch to Verizon or Sprint even if they cost me $10 more.

    NOTE:
    1. AT&T doesn’t allow customers to sideload apps on Android
    2. AT&T doesn’t support Amazon’s Android Appstore
    3. AT&T has the least value-for-money services
    4. AT&T as very slow 3G and 4G networks

    Have been an AT and T customer for the last 15 years. My three kids and my husband and I. Yesterday went to the A T and T store because my sons phone is completely broke. He is not due for an upgrade for 60 days. Now I am forced to pay for a data plan and other fees while we wait 60 days and my son had no phone! Super duper! A T and T needs to be more user friendly. All we did last night is compare other carriers to see which one we will be switching to.

    • So because you have been a customer for 15 years, you didn’t have insurance, and it broke before you are eligible for an upgrade. You think that AT&T should do the right thing and give you a phone at a discounted rate? A contract is a contract.

      That is like you buying a car from a specific car company for 20 years and then the radio breaks 1,000 miles after the warranty runs out. Contract is a contract.

        Whatever happened to good customer service? AT&T already charges exorbitant prices compared to their competitors.
        It would seem that they treat their customers with disdain on a regular basis. You, sir or madam sound like someone without conscience. Being a good human being doesn’t mean milking every customer for all you can get just because you can. Smh! That is the thought process that is destroying this country. Whatever happened to holding a company to a moral standard? AT&T should be ashamed of the
        Selves for how they treat their customers. However, the only wayto get something done about it is to make your voice heard. The pen IS mightier than the sword and sometimes even the dollar.

  • I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE MY PHONE 3 TIMES AND AT T WANTS TO SEND ME THE SAME PHONE AGAIN I TALKED TO SOMEONE WHO HAS BEEN WITH AT T FOR YEARS AND SHE TOLD ME THAT HER PHONE DID THE SAME THING AND THEY WAS GOING TO SEND HER A NEW PHONE AND SHE SAID SHE THEM DON’T SEND ME THE SAME ONE AND THEY DIDN’T SO WHY WON’T THEY SEND ME A DIFFERENT ONE INSTED OF THESE PICE OF CRAP PHONES

    • They did the same thing to me and then I asked for a refurb phone…which I really did not want….but it was like a brand new phone and they agreed and sent me a refurb of the phone I wanted for free, and it has not messed up at all.

    I have tried every address that I can find to reach someone who can tell me anything except we don’t handle that at this office. Do you even have an office or number that I can talk to someone?I am tryinng to get the replacement for my prepaid phone that expires tomorrow.This makes 2 mos. that I have been calling and no success!!!!!I went in to the Fla. office I was told too and they acted like they had never heard of the program and gave me a no. to call and be insulted. Please contact me as I can’t seem to reACH YOU.

    I’ve been an Att customer since before they turned in to Cingular. Stayed with them through the Cingular years, and now they’re Att again… I’ve been told I’m eligible for a free upgrade. I’m finally ready to toss my antique Nokia 6xxx and they want to charge me $18 “on time upgrade fee” WHAT A LOAD OF CRAP!!! Come on At&t, you’re already hitting me for the “required” $15/mo data plan for the new phone. $18 one time fee…?

        we have phones that cut you off that any giving time. we was told that at&t had towers down, annd wasnt going to do anything to them.

    I have been with AT&T for years and the phone I have is the worse phone I have ever had with AT&T. It is a Pantech and drops almost every call I’m on. The only way I can send out a text is to type the text, hit send, then dial my voice mail for it to reach an outside line in order for the text to go out. Half the time I have to text someone and tell them to call me because I can’t call out. When trying to call out it just keeps saying “dialing” and never connects. I have called your customer service several times and just keep getting transferred to several different people asking the same questions. I feel due to this trouble I should either get an early upgrade or send me any other phone. The one I have is under warranty, if I could just speak with someone without repeating the same 100 questions. Just send me a phone PLEASE, I will send the one I have back to you. If I don’t get a response I am cancelling my contract. 513/649-4276 is my cell number.
