The HTC EVO 4G created a sensation when it was introduced in the summer of 2010. The first 4G phone available in the U.S., the EVO 4G took advantage of the high-speed connection available from Sprint’s WiMax network, easily surpassing the networking speed capability on any other cell phone. Other companies and carriers came roaring back in the next few months, and one of the latest is the Motorola DROID Bionic, which will use Verizon Wireless’ LTE network for wireless 4G connectivity. Like the EVO 4G, the DROID Bionic has a 4.3-inch display and a front-facing camera, but the two devices diverge from there. How does the up-and-coming DROID Bionic compare to the popular and powerful EVO 4G?

Key Differences

  • Display: Both the Motorola DROID Bionic and the HTC EVO 4G have 4.3-inch LCD displays, but the DROID Bionic promises 540 x 960-pixel resolution compared to the EVO 4G’s 480 x 800 pixels. Both have large, bright displays that make it easy to watch longer programming, such as a movie. The HTC EVO 4G has a convenient kickstand that lets you prop the device up for comfortable desktop viewing.
  • Operating system: Both the Motorola DROID Bionic and the HTC EVO 4G run Android 2.2. Motorola promises an upgrade to Android 2.3 for the DROID Bionic by the end of 2011 and HTC has also announced that the company will provide an Android upgrade for the EVO 4G, although no date has been set.
  • Processor and RAM: The Motorola DROID Bionic features a dual-core 1GHz processor, and will be among the first cell phones to run with a dual-core processor. The HTC EVO 4G’s single processor clocks in at 1GHz. Both phones feature 512MB of RAM.
  • Keyboard: Both the Motorola DROID Bionic and the HTC EVO 4G have on-screen virtual QWERTY keyboards.
  • Storage Space: The Motorola DROID Bionic will ship with 16GB of onboard memory, and has a microSD slot that will accommodate memory cards up to 32GB. The HTC EVO 4G has 1GB of onboard storage and it has a microSD memory slot that works with cards up to 32GB.
  • Camera: Both the Motorola DROID Bionic and the HTC EVO 4G have 8-megapixel still-image cameras, and both have VGA-quality (640 x 480) front-facing cameras for video chat. Both can record HD video at 720p resolution.
  • Battery life: The Motorola DROID Bionic will have a 1,930 mAh lithium-ion battery that is replaceable by the user. The HTC EVO 4G has a 1,500 mAh user-replaceable battery.

    IMO, my EVO is rooted with Unrevoked3,Running on Kings Unleashed UltraROM and Kernel is 4.3.1
    and an Extended 2600 Battery!!
    It does evrething I need to do. Looks nice and is fast!!
    So, compare to the Bionic or the Thunderbolt, my Evo has the edge!!

    Bionic has dualies, EVO has a single

  • The HTC EVO 4g front camera is 1.3 mp not that it that bog of a difference o hope MOTO has upgraded motoblur because it was a little messy before and the EVO been out for almost 8 months and its so I give of to HTC for coming out with a phone that other companies are catching up with I’m gonna wait til a couple dual core phones come out til they get the bugs out

    When do you think or your best guest HTC EVO 4G will upgrade there unit to be more completive with DROID Bionic:

    Higher pixel resolution, maybe Android 2.3, dual-core processor, larger onboard memory, stronger/more battery life and a Amoled display like Samsung?

    I do not need a smart phone right now so I have some time to be patient. I would hate to buy one and that 60 days later the new and improved one comes out.

    • Marv, I think you’re safe for 60 days – the EVO 4G is sufficiently cutting-edge that it will not be replaced for a few months. My best guess (and it is only a guess) is that Sprint will announce a replacement for the EVO 4G this summer, one year after the original EVO’s introduction. In the meantime, it’s possible that HTC/Sprint will offer an upgrade to Android 2.3 for the EVO. The next generation of phones is expected to have more on-board storage (16GB, typically) as well as larger batteries. And some phones at the high end will have dual-core processors.
