I chose Kajeet (Sprint Network) for my daughter. They had the best on-line parental controls. I have AT&T, but their parental controls weren’t what we needed. Kajeet allows you to input the #’s the phone can send/receive calls and text messages. Then you don’t have to worry about sexting or predators. You also have the option to limit minutes per day used, time of day phone used and there is GPS for safety. You can even get email alerts to make sure your child arrived at their destination.

Could you tell me more about your child’s plan? It sounds really good. How does it work? Who do you call?
December 21, 2011
I was just looking at some cell phones for my niece and found some information about the Kajeet. It seems like a great option! To sign up for the Kajeet service, you don’t sign up through Sprint, though the phone uses the Sprint network. This is the wedsite I found the information on. http://cellphonesforkidsguide.com/ Hope it helps!

Poushali, Wirefly sells phones only in the US and we’re not familiar with international models. You’ll probably have the best success looking at a cell phone blog operating from your country (India?).
Good luck!

Cell phones for kids -I’d go with a prepaid carrier, like TracFone. This is to prevent crazy phone bills and since there’s a finite number of minutes, you are in control of your kids phone time. As far as the rightful age, well that all depends on your child/situation. Besides, if you want to buy cell phones that are specifically designed for kids like ones that can only dial 3 numbers, they are often more pricey. I think the key to getting kids cell phones is also to teach them the responsiblity that comes along with owning one.
May 23, 2011
That’s very sensible, Nina. Wirefly now sells a variety of pre-paid cellphones from several different providers, so there’s something for everyone.

I got my kids a phone at the young age of 7. Why? Because they go back and forth to school, to the park, etc. My oldest was 9. What is funny, my youngest takes better care of her phone. LOL. I love the GPS features to locate them at anytime. I can pay extra and block their calls, incoming or outgoing, I have total access at this time to their voice mail, and Verizon shows me incoming/outgoing calls, who they are texting, and we have serious rules that I follow up with. As in, when I ask for the phone, I get the phone and will go through their phone at anytime. If your child goes ANYWHERE without you….to their friends house, to the park, etc…. a cell phone is a MUST, especially with GPS family location. My kindergartener will have one this year for the same reason. He rides his bike with his sisters and even though they are older, he knows how to use the phone and allows him to call me if anything is wrong.

what do you mean by free? can we get a phone for free?send me how to get a free phones pls?
February 16, 2011
For many phones, you can get the phone for free from Wirefly if you sign up for a two-year contract. To complete the deal, you will need a credit card account in good standing and pass a credit check. Assuming those are not a problem, you can get a free phone… and there are some pretty nice phones available for free from Wirefly.

Kids need phones, it’s a different time, now the information exposure is out there and it’silly to deny them access. I got my daughter a prepaid phone with Net10, and pay only $15 bucks a month for 200 minutes, it’s enought for her, goodness the average adult uses 200 a month! the perk is she is really good with the spending, controling her balance and all! and she is only 10. I’m glad I got her the cellphone, she is also learning to control her expenses. A lot more than I did when I was her age.

I really want and need a cell phone but my mom said I can have one when I can pay for it with my own money…
September 20, 2010
Right! I am of the firm belief that if you’re going to spend money (sorry Joslyn, everything comes with a price, even if your mom / dad buys it for you), whatever you spend it on must justify the expense. In the case of buying my teenager a phone, it’s there to phone me. To tell me to pick up from school, or he’s forgotten something, and most importantly, if there is trouble – then the phone comes to it’s own. It’s not there to entertain, or to keep an imaginable link between the same friends you will see at school the next day. Sure, those things are nice, but not essential. Any kid can work (maybe I sound terrible), or at least deserve some money (may it be pocket money or not), with which they can buy their own minutes. Having said that, why shouldn’t I get a tracfone, that is by far cheaper than any other phone, and has extremely cheap top-up rates, AND, won’t get me into trouble at the end of the month because my son ‘lost track’ of usage? I’m being given the cold shoulder because of not getting a smart phone with a contract! Seriously!

There are many choices of cell phones out there but when it comes to choosing one for you child, tracfone is a great choice. Tracfone offers high-quality phones including camera and data phones that will appeal to kids taste. Plus, there is no contact and a whole years service can cost only $80 for 240 mins. If you have a child that might use their phone more and 240 mins wouldn’t be enough, for a $20 airtime card they can receive 60 minutes of talk time.

For the sake of respecting your parents and other’s around I seriously don’t think u are ready 4 a cell phone. U have proven that just by your bad language. Grow up first then u may deserve a fone!!
December 7, 2011
Alex, I understand the fear of “what might happen?” but if you were my kid with that attitude you wouldn’t get one either. If you are old enough to get a job get you a working permit and go to work. I’d never get my child anything with that attitude but a smack in the head! just sayin’

Why do kids need a cell phone? Just get them a FotoDialer. It allows them to dial people/places by pressing a button next to the wallet-sized photograph of whoever they want to call. Emergency numbers are placed on the first page.
