T-Mobile Upgrade Eligibility Requirements
Q. Am I Eligible for an T-Mobile Cell Phone Upgrade?
Not all existing T-Mobile customers qualify for contract extensions. T-Mobile alone sets threshold rules as to who is eligible for a contract extension as follows:
- The customer must be in month 22 or later of their contract (2 year contracts), in month 11 (1 year contracts), or off contract.
- The customer must be on a qualifying rate plan:
o $39.99 or higher for a single line
o $59.99 or higher for a Family Plan
- Currertly a postpaid customer, renewing on a postpaid plan (ie. Flexpay, SmartAccess, and Prepaid are not eligible).
- The customer must be in good standing with T-Mobile.
- The customer must receive a new T-Mobile device.
- The customer must extend their contract for 2 years.
Note that eligibility results may vary based on a variety of conditions including, but not limited to a customer’s usage history, payment record, previous phone replacement, etc. Upgrade approval eligibility is determined by T-Mobile in its sole discretion. Account approval may vary.

Hello I have been wwith t-mobile for a year now I have a 2 year contract buut I would like to know if I am elegible for a free phone upgrade because the one I have is torn up, can u help me ot?????
July 13, 2012
Hi Edgar,
All you need to do to see if you are eligible for an upgrade on your T-Mobile phone is to go to Wirefly.com and click on the upgrade checker. It is one of the top boxes on the right hand side of the page. Enter the information that it is asking for and it will tell you your options.

I am eligible for an upgrade next month on the 23rd, do I have to wait specifically until that day or can I upgrade anytime within the month im eligible & can I upgrade on wirefly??
June 25, 2012
Hi Robin,
You will have to wait until the 23rd to upgrade your phone through Wirefly.

If I decide to upgrade, do I also get a discount for the new device? For example when I used to be with Verizon I would get $100 discount every time I had upgrade to another device with an extension of a 2 year contract.
June 21, 2012
Hi Dip,
You will get a discount for signing up for the new two year agreement. I believe you are referring to an additional $100 discount on top of the discount for resigning for two years. T-Mobile does not offer any additional discounts for upgrading.

If I use my T-Mobile upgrade and decide that I like my current phone better – can I keep the upgrade phone I bought through Wirefly and keep it as a backup and switch back to my old phone? I just want to make sure I don’t get charged any weird fees for not using the specific phone I upgrade to.
June 4, 2012
Hi Yvonne,
You are required to keep the new phone on the phone number that you upgraded for 6 months. After that period you can change back to your old phone. If you would like to talk to one of our customer service reps about all of the details please give them a call at 1-800-239-6138.

I applied the upgrading on 3/19/2012, I have not received the phone set yet. Please reply through my e-mail address. Thank you. tombui. 3/23/2012
March 26, 2012
Tombui, I can’t send responses via e-mail — I can only respond to requests here in this forum.
That said, I can not find your information in our system. You will have to give me your order number, phone number or the e-mail address you used when you ordered the phone. I can use those to look up your order and determine the status.
Thanks for thinking of Wirefly!

Question, if I get the T-Mobile myTouch for my Mom, and 2 or 3 months down the line, she doesn’t like it, can I switch to a regular flip phone, do I still have to pay the data plan fee, even if the flip phone is not a smart phone? I am not breaking the contract and I know I can purchase an unlocked phone for less than $100.
February 29, 2012
John, if you get the myTouch by LG and it’s not on contract, you can switch to another phone at any time. However, Wirefly (and T-Mobile) gives you only 14 days to return the phone for a full refund — from 14 to 30 days, you can exchange the phone for an identical model (i.e., another myTouch by LG), and after 30 days neither Wirefly nor T-Mobile will take it back.
If you are not on contract, then you are probably on a month-to-month plan. If you switch to a flip phone, then you simply pay for the plan it requires. You should not have to pay for data for a flip phone if you are paying off-contract. That is between you and T-Mobile, however. If you have questions about contracts and monthly costs, T-Mobile is the place to go, as your agreement is with T-Mobile.
Good luck!

I have received/activated an Android phone from Best Buy online in the past few days. It was T-Mobile upgrade eligible. (Didn’t know about Wirefly until today.) I am having 2nd thoughts about the Android; I have been a Blackberry user for 5 years and am not pleased so far with email/calendar/touchscreen qwerty, etc …. If I return the phone to Best Buy within the 14 day remorse period (which I can still do), T-Mobile has said that my upgrade eligibility would be restored within 30 days. Does this sound correct with your experience and am I correct to assume I will just have to wait to get a new device? (I will have to re-activate my old Blackberry in the interim and will probably go to the 9900 when eligibilty restored. Wish I could do this sooner.) Thanks.
February 2, 2012
Doug, sorry but I just don’t know what T-Mobile’s and Best Buy’s policies are. I can say that Wirefly has a 14-day return policy that allows you to return the product and you go back to the way things were. In other words, you can re-activate your old BlackBerry and just keep using it as you did before. With Wirelfy, you also have 30 days to swap to a different device with no penalty, so you could call Wirefly after 25 days and swap for a different Android phone, a new BlackBerry or whatever you prefer.
However, I can’t comment on the policies of T-Mobile and Best Buy. Anything I say will be speculation and we can’t be responsible for the policies of other companies.

My contract expires in April and the eligibility check says that I qualify to get an upgrade late in January if I sign up for additional 2 year contract, would my contract be renewed until April 2014 or until January 2014 if I do a 2 year renewal?
January 17, 2012
Ferina, if you are eligible for an upgrade in January and you extend your contract at that time, the contract dates will re-align to January. Your contract would then expire in January 2014. Happy shopping!

i just extended my contract for 24 mo. why do i have to wait until feb 4th to upgrade? why can’t i get an upgrade now?
January 16, 2012
Jeffrey, did you use Wirefly’s Eligibility Checker? If Feb. 4 is the date that you got from Wirefly’s Eligibility Checker, then that is the date that T-Mobile requires. If the Eligiblity Checker shows that you can upgrade now, then you’re all set… just go for it.

January 5, 2012
Gil, Wirefly mostly sells phones with a service plan. If you just upgraded your service through T-Mobile, then you’re probably not eligible for a low-cost phone through Wirefly. However, you can call Wirefly at 866-852-3216 and discuss your exact situation with an agent, just to be sure.

Okay. My goal is to have both my wife and I under one plan (Family Plan). Currently we are both with T-Mobile and under separate contracts. My wife’s contract is getting close to expiring however, mine is not. I’d like to know what to do because I want that new Samsung Galaxy S II phone and my wife said she would settle for the phone I currently have now which is the G2 by HTC. She has an older Blackbury me now or pay later phone that has been nothing but trouble, that’s why she would gladly take my current phone. Should I just add a line or switch to a Family Plan? How can I get my hands on a new Samsung Galaxy S II and make everyone happy?
December 19, 2011
Ed, you have too many questions and special circumstances for me to answer here. Your best bet is to call Wirefly at 866-852-3216 and speak to an agent. Explain what you want to do and you’ll get advice for your specific situation.
Good luck!

Our contract with T-Mobile expired several months ago. The 2-line plan we’re on is an old SunCom National plan that T-Mobile carried over when they absorbed SunCom, and we have simple basic phones and no data plan. Since there is absolutely nothing to carry over from our current T-Mobile account, can we just open a new T-Mobile Family Plan account with data service here on Wirefly, order new phones (and hopefully carry over our old phone numbers) and close our old account since the phone prices for a new account are for some reason less expensive for NEW accounts? Or to do that must I first close our current T-Mobile account and then open a new T-Mobile account and phones here on Wirefly?
December 15, 2011
Sheldon, if you are paying T-Mobile for service now, you are an existing customer. That means T-Mobile requires that you pay “upgrade” prices for new phones, and you can’t get the more favorable “new account” prices. This is a rule that all the carriers have, I am told. You can’t just close your account — you have to have no account with the carrier for at least six months before they will consider you to be a “new” account. Strange, I know… you’d think that the carrier would do everything possible to retain an existing customer but this rule seems to push them away.
Hope that helps — even if it wasn’t what you were hoping to hear.

I am a t-mobile customer and I need to know can I use my upgrade discount online? Or do I have to use it in the store to upgrade my phone?
December 5, 2011
Bonnie, whether you can use your upgrade discount depends on whether you are eligible for an upgrade or not. T-Mobile requires that Wirefly can only upgrade customers after a two-year contract has ended. To check your upgrade uligibility, visit Wirefly.com and use the Eligibility Checker… it’s free and fast.

I have 5 lines on my account. Only 1 line is out of contract (this line is one of the primary line).
Can I upgrade this line and keep other lines intact online?
When I do this upgrading, only my line will extend the contract, the other 4 lines will not renew the contract, right? Also, my account will not renew the contract, right? Only the line that I upgrade will be renew the contract, right?
Thank you
November 28, 2011
Sam, yes, you can upgrade only one line if it is eligible. Your other lines will not be changed and they will not be renewed or affected in any way. Only the line you upgrade will be changed to reflect the upgrade.

Hi i have family plane for two lines, both are now out of contract. i want now upgrade the two lines, the thing is i do not have social security number. my question is should i upgrade my plane thrugh wirefly without the social security number?
Michael
November 22, 2011
Michael, the last four digits of your Social Security number are required by the carrier to buy a phone under contract. Wirefly provides that number to the carrier (T-Mobile in your case), but it’s the carrier that requires it. I think it’s actually a government regulation. So if you don’t have a Social Security number, you will not be able to get a discounted phone, since those all require contracts.
Hope that helps!

Hi,
I have a tmobile family plan of 3 lines from more than a year. At the time of taking this connection, i was told that i can cancel my lines without any cancellation fee if i am moving out of the country but now they were telling i cant cancel like that and i have pay 200 dollars for each lines for cancellation as per the policy they have introduced on feb month of this year. Can you help why i have to pay the cancellation fee as this cancellation policy was not there at that time.Is there any way to cancel 2 of my lines without any cancellation fee.
November 8, 2011
Rama, your agreement is with T-Mobile, so T-Mobile should be able to explain what is required to cancel your lines. If you have any documentation to support your understanding that you could cancel your lines with no penalty, have that in your hand when you contact T-Mobile.
However, there’s nothing Wirefly can do to help you with this. Your agreement is between you and T-Mobile. Good luck!

Timothy, the new BlackBerry Bold is the 9900, and it definitely has some improvements over your 9780. It has a faster processor, a nicer display and a better camera, among the upgrades. Is it possible to enrolling myself into Corporate discount program while ordering T-mobile online at wirefly.com?
October 27, 2011
Dave, I’m not exactly sure what you are asking. If you get a corporate discount on your phone service (or if you qualify for one and you’re not yet taking advantage of it), you can usually buy a phone and service from Wirefly and still get your corporate discount. Is that what you are asking?
Bob at Wirefly
October 27, 2011
sorry for the confusion…Here is the case
I am eligible for corporate discount but currently I am not taking advantage of this. As I know I may get enrolled in this discount program thru T-mobile retailer. My question is Does wirefly extend this facility (as wirefly is T-mobile retailer) while I will go to wirefly for my plan and phone upgrade?
October 31, 2011
Dave, sorry for the long delay in answering.
What you want to do should work. Buy the phone from Wirefly, and you will need to buy a service plan at the same time. Once you have the phone, contact T-Mobile and give them the contract code for your company’s discount agreement. That should get you the correct discount. If for some reason things do not work as you expect, you have 14 days to return the phone to Wirefly.
Good luck!

Hi,
As per wirefly eligibility checker, I will be eligble for upgrade October end (T-mobile). When I checked the data plan you are offering I can NOT see the plan I am looking for (Simple Unlimited Smartphone Data – 200MB High Speed) while other retailers are offering this. Is it possible for wirefly to offer this data plan? Thanks You
***Currently I do NOT have any data plan ***
October 24, 2011
KC, Wirefly does not offer all the plans that T-Mobile offers, so it sounds like you will have to get the “Simple Unlimited Smartphone Data – 200MB High Speed” plan directly from T-Mobile.

I have two smart phone lines on my T-Mobile account. My wife line is eligible for a full upgrade and mine won’t be eligible for an upgrade until July ’12. I wanted to buy a her a new phone for her birthday coming up in two wks. If I buy her a phone and the 3 wks later she decides she don’t like the phone, will I be able to used that phone as my phone without violating any rules?
October 17, 2011
A., you have only one eligible phone line now. If you get an upgrade for it, you have used up your eligibility until July 2012. If you get a new phone for your wife’s line, then she decides that she doesn’t like it, you will have to pay full price for a replacement. If you go to Wirefly and look at the phone you’re interested in, click on the button that says “Replacement Cost”… that is the phone’s full price.
Or she can use the phone until July 2012, then give it to you and she can use your eligibility to get the phone she wants.

This is not the question refer to. The question is, if his wife upgrade and get the phone. Can he use that phone instead of her? She use her old phone, and He use the new one.
I have this question too. Please help me out.
Thank you
November 28, 2011
Sam, if you have a line that’s eligible for an upgrade, you can get a new phone when you upgrade that line. Once you have the phone, you can swap your SIM with your wife’s, and the new phone will be on your line. There is no penalty for that.
Is that what you are asking?
Bob at Wirefly
June 12, 2012
So you can do this, Scott from wirefly on the first question, said that you must use that phone on the line it is activated on for 6 months.

I picked out a phone that is to hard for me to use is there anything I can do to change it to a simpler phone to use?
September 22, 2011
Aheilla, If you bought the phone from Wirefly, you have 14 days from the date of purchase to contact us and ask about replacement. Once you do that, you have another week to return the phone to us, and Wirefly pays for the return charges. Please give Wirefly a call at 866-852-3216.
If you bought the phone someplace other than Wirefly, you should immediately take it back to that vendor and ask about returning it. The carriers (Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile) have all recently tightened their return policies, so don’t delay if you need to return a device.
Hope that helps!

September 15, 2011
Luis, this is one of those situations where the carrier (T-Mobile) offers an upgrade discount that Wirefly is not allowed to offer. Yes, Wirefly generally has better prices than the carriers, but the carriers require that customers complete a two-year contract before they can upgrade with Wirefly. We’d love to help you with your upgrade, but you’ll either have to wait or go through T-Mobile.

I just switched from a flexpay account to a postpaid account a month ago. When I try to upgrade through the t-mobile website I don’t get any discounts. When using the wirefly eligibility check the status is pending and asks me to continue and that once I submit the order my eligibility will be verified. Am I correct in assuming that I probably won’t get the discounted price at wirefly either?
September 14, 2011
Victor, that’s probably a good assumption. You could try calling a Wirefly sales agent at 800-552-9000 and have him/her work through the process, but it will be more-or-less the same as what you couid do directly on Wirefly. Good luck!

I just upgraded my phone though wirefly and when if prompt me to chose a plan, I clicked the box to keep my existing phone plan. Now I am getting charged a $30 data plan. I did not request any changes to my plan. I read the fine print and it did not say that wirefly will change my plan without my consent especially when I CLICKED the keep existing plan option. I also have read that if I lower my plan than I will be charge more money. Can I change my data plan to a cheaper plan without WIREFLY charging me or do I have to keep the $30 per month data plan that WIREFLY implanted on me without my knowledge?

How did it resolve?
If I am on the very old data plan t-zone/web2go, now I upgrade to have a smart phone and check for keep my data plan. Phone may or may not work with the old data. Will you put it up for a $30 data plan? If then, can I reduce it to $10 (200MB) plan without any penalty?
Thanks
November 28, 2011
Sam, I’m not sure I completely understand your question. However, if you buy a new phone and sign up for a $30 per month plan, you will have to keep that plan for two years. You will not be able to reduce it to a $10 per month plan. If you do that, you will pay a penalty.
Bob at Wirefly
November 29, 2011
The question is. I have internet plan( t-zone/web2go plan). This is a very old data plan that T-mobile have a while black. I am on this plan.
When I upgrade my phone, I select that I want to keep my existing data plan. Once I got the phone, the phone may or may not work with this old data plan. Will you automatically upgrade my data plan to the $30 per month plan?
In case you automatically upgrade it to $30 per month, can I make a change to the $10 per month by calling the customer service?
Of course if it didn’t work, I still call t-mobile service and make the change to $10 per month.
What I concern is, if you automatically upgrade my data plan to that $30 per month if my old data plan didn’t work with the new phone?
Thanks.
November 30, 2011
Sam, I am personally not familiar with your web2go plan. You should speak either to a Wirefly phone agent or a T-Mobile agent to confirm that your web2go plan is a valid data plan for the phone that you want to get. You can call Wirefly at 866-852-3216 and we can check, but you may be better off checking first with T-Mobile. Ultimately, your contract is with T-Mobile, so they will have to give the final approval to your $10 plan.
Generally speaking, no carrier will sell you an expensive new phone, then allow you to use a $10 per month plan. That is not enough money to pay the carrier for the phone it just sold you. This is not a Wirefly requirement — it’s from the carrier (T-Mobile).

August 23, 2011
Robert, please use Wirefly’s Eligibility Checker to determine if your 2nd line is eligible for an upgrade. Keep in mind that the carrier (T-Mobile) has more upgrade options than they allow Wirefly to have, but the best place to start is with the Eligibility Checker. Good luck!

I am eligible upgrade my phone (tmobile). I have a family plan with absolutely no data/text plans. I have selected a free smart phone (tmobile-touch). There is no option to “not to have a data plan”. The fine line says that if there is no data plan, they will automatically put me an unlimited costly data plan. Thats insane.
August 16, 2011
SD, a smartphone requires a data plan… you can’t opt out. If you want a lower-cost data plan, you will have to choose it. If you go to T-Mobile or any other vendor, the result will be the same: The only way to get a smartphone without a data plan is to pay the full unsubsidized price for the phone.

July 13, 2011
John, unfortunately, the carriers (such as T-Mobile) allow certain upgrades directly that we can’t offer at Wirefly. My family is due for an upgrade. I would like to upgrade all 4 lines through Wirefly. I’ve heard there are some complications with that, like after the order goes through the 2 additional lines get canceled and cause unnecessary problems for the families. Does that happen with all family upgrades? You can only upgrade 2?
July 7, 2011
Lisa, thanks for thinking of Wirefly for your upgrades!
Wirefly can upgrade as many lines as you have, but the carriers (such as T-Mobile) only allow us to process upgrades in certain circumstances. In some cases, the carrier may offer you an upgrade possibility that Wirefly is not allowed to process. A good place to start is with the Upgrade Eligibility Checker on Wirefly.com. Go to http://www.wirefly.com/upgrades and put in your information. If that tells you that you are eligible for an upgrade, then you can almost certainly do your upgrades through Wirefly.
We will also do a credit check and it’s possible that the credit check may come back and say that you are approved for only some of the lines you want to upgrade. Assuming the credit check approves all four lines and the Upgrade Eligibility Checker is happy, you should be able to upgrade all four lines with Wirefly. Thanks!

Inez, that is possible but there are several questions that need to be answered first. Please call Wirefly at 800-552-9000 and discuss what you’d like to do with a phone agent.

for 15 months I have been using my Blackberry 8900 Curve to tether to my laptop.
Suddenly, 10 days ago T-Mobile not longer supports “tethering”. when I signed the 2
year contract it was only because of the tethering option. I am very dissappointed
with T-mobile and when my contract is up I WILL NOT DO FURTHER BUSINESS WITH T-MOBILE.
