A giant plastic frozen yogurt sculpture has joined its brethren (a similarly giant doughnut, cupcake and eclair) outside of Google’s Android headquarters in Mountain View, CA, signaling that the release of the next version of the Android mobile operating system is imminent. Android version 2.2, lovingly dubbed Froyo, will bring Android devices native tethering and WiFi hotspot capabilities in addition to support for Adobe Flash 10.1.

With screen shots to boot, the team over at TechCrunch has confirmed the previously unrevealed internet sharing features. The addition of internet tethering will allow Android users to set up their laptops to hop on the internet using their phone’s 3G (or 4G, as the case may soon be) connectivity. As a mobile hotspot, multiple WiFi-enabled devices will be able to use an Android device’s internet connectivity simultaneously.

Several weeks ago, Google announced that the update to its increasingly ubiquitous mobile operating system would also deliver full support for Adobe flash video content.

Whether wireless carriers will allow the tethering and mobile hot spot capabilities to roll out in the 2.2 update to Android devices on their network — and what lofty prices may be levied for the privilege — will remain to be seen. Either way, though, the news is certainly another win for Android fans and manufacturers alike that is likely to have Apple tugging at its collar with renewed vigor.
