At least 65,000 Android-powered mobile phones ship daily according to Google CEO Eric Schmidt. Speaking to a group of investors during Google’s annual shareholder’s meeting yesterday, Schmidt added that 34 mobile devices in 49 countries are powered by Google’s mobile operating system.
“Our partners are shipping about 65,000 Android handsets per day but if you check the blogosphere you’ll discover there are some reports that that number might be quite low,” Schmidt said. “It looks like Android is going to be either the number one or number two player.”
Last week, market research firm NPD Group reported that total unit sales of Google Android devices had surged past Apple’s iPhone in the first quarter of the year. Android-powered handsets are now only second in popularity in the U.S. to Blackberry phones manufactured by Canadian device maker Research In Motion.
