Reston, VA – December 28, 2010 – The HTC Evo 4G is a popular Android phone on the Sprint network, but its users have been growing restless waiting for SWYPE capability. HTC recently announced a software upgrade for the Evo 4G that adds SWYPE, as well as a couple other features.
The software update was announced Dec. 15, 2010, and it has the upgrade number 3.70.651.1. To determine if your Evo 4G can use the new upgrade, navigate to the Home screen, then tap Menu > Settings > About phone > Software Information to locate the Software number. If your Software number is lower than 3.70.651.1, HTC recommends you proceed with the upgrade.
HTC cautions that the upgraded software will take about 20 minutes to load on the Evo 4G and that the phone will reboot itself (possibly multiple times) during the software loading process. The company recommends that the phone should be run from its charger during the upgrade and that the process will go fastest in locations where there is 4G or WiFi reception. Removing the battery during the upgrade may render the Evo 4G inoperable, so it’s best to leave the phone alone while it upgrades.
SWYPE is a popular keyboard shortcut app that speeds up writing a message using an on-screen keyboard. Instead of lifting your fingers off the keyboard between letters, you simply swipe a finger from letter to letter and the SWYPE app will predict the word you are trying to write. For most common words, SWYPE’s predictions are uncannily correct, and writing a message can go much faster than the usual hunt-and-peck method.
In addition to SWYPE, software upgrade number 3.70.651.1 adds Kindle Reader capability and a 4G scan widget that makes it easier to locate 4G reception areas.
