Windows Mobile 6.5

Microsoft announced today that Windows Mobile 6.5, the newest version of its mobile device operating system, will debut worldwide October 6th. At launch, Windows Mobile 6.5 will be available on handsets operating on AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon Wireless networks.

The software giant’s latest mobile operating system will offer a fresh look and feel in an effort to better compete with interfaces found on handsets manufacturered by competitors including Apple and Research In Motion. The operating system, touted as more consumer-friendly than previous version of Windows Mobile, will also feature enhancements that improve its usability on touch screen devices.

Microsoft will also be launching a mobile application store similar to that of Apple’s App Store and Research In Motion’s BlackBerry App World. Dubbed Windows Marketplace for Mobile, the store will offer applications a consolidated lineup of applications developed for the smartphone platform.
