Netbook FAQs
Q: What is a netbook?
A: Netbooks are ultra-small, lightweight laptop computers that use energy-efficient microprocessors and displays to allow for extended use between charges. They are optimized for email, web browsing, and lightweight computing applications. Netbooks do not have CD or DVD drives, and do not have as much memory capacity or connection ports as larger laptops.
Q: Can I use a netbook as my primary, everyday computer?
A: A netbook's size and portability make it a great secondary computer for people on the go. Light users who aren't behind a computer all day may find a netbook to be enough for their everyday needs, but those who use a computer for more than an hour at a time may find that they need a bigger screen and keyboard, a bigger hard drive, or a more powerful processor.
Q: Can I use a netbook for movies, music, and games?
A: Netbooks do not have CD or DVD drives, but they can be used to watch movies and listen to music either via the internet or from a flash drive, iPod or MP3 player. Netbooks are not designed for processor-intensive tasks like photo and video editing or high-speed gaming.
Q: How does a netbook connect to the internet?
A: Netbooks can connect to the internet via a 3G wireless network, a Wi-Fi network, or in some cases, via a wired Ethernet cable. 3G-enabled netbooks have a built-in cellular radio and so do not require a separate wireless internet card. When accessing the internet from home, hotels or coffee shops, Wi-Fi can be a cost-effective supplement to your 3G wireless plan, since Wi-Fi access normally allows unlimited data use for free or a fixed fee. To switch from the 3G network to Wi-Fi, you simply flip a switch on the netbook. Some netbooks also have a built-in Ethernet jack, thus enabling internet access when Wi-Fi and 3G wireless networks are not available.
Q: When I receive my netbook, what will I need to do to get it working?
A: Your netbook will be delivered to your door via FedEx and your new 3G data plan will be activated so that you may begin using the 3G capabilities of your netbook as soon as it arrives. Simply follow the directions included in the box to begin the Microsoft Windows setup process. This will take about 30 minutes, and following that your netbook will be ready for use.
Q: Do netbooks come with Windows, Security Software, or Productivity Tools?
A: Most netbooks come pre-loaded with either Windows XP or the Linux operating system. The netbooks sold here come pre-loaded with Windows XP Home Edition and include trial versions of several security and productivity suites.
Q: How long can netbooks be used between charges?
A: Netbooks with 3-cell battery packs may operate for 2.5 to 3 hours between charges. Netbooks with larger 6-cell battery packs can run for 7 to 9 hours.
Q: The data plan sold with the netbook includes up to 5 GB of data - how much is that?
A: 5 GB (or gigabytes) is the equivalent of 5,120 MB (or megabytes) of data. Using general assumptions, 5 GB per month lets you send or receive 150,000 emails with no attachments or 50,000 emails with a five page Microsoft Word document attached to each. Surfing the internet, you could visit 30,000 typical web pages per month if you aren't downloading files. A song download is about 1 MB per song (or 5,000 per month). Short internet video clips are about 3 MB, but downloading a 2-hour movie will use about 1.5 GB (that's only 3 movies per month). We recommend downloading large files when you are connected to the Internet via Wi-Fi or Ethernet, which doesn't use your 3G data allowance at all. In short, 5 GB is a lot of data for most users. To help avoid overage charges, SMS and email alerts can be requested from the carrier to warn you when you are approaching your 5 GB limit, however receipt of these messages is not guaranteed. This information is intended as a guide and actual usage and rates may vary.
Q: Are other 3G data plans available?
A: No. At this time we are only offering the carriers' 5 GB data plans for activation with netbooks.
Q: Can I use my existing cell phone carrier data plan with my netbook?
A: No. At this time, the carriers require that you activate a new data plan for your netbook.
Q: How are you able to sell me a netbook at such a low price?
A: When you purchase a netbook and a carrier data plan from us, the carrier pays us a fee. We use a portion of this fee to subsidize the price you pay for the netbook, but in exchange we ask you to agree to our Equipment Discount policy. One component of this policy is that you permit us to charge up to $300 to your credit card should you cancel, modify or fail to pay the carrier for your data plan within the first six months following activation. If you cancel your plan within the 24-month contract term, the carrier can charge you an early termination fee of up to $175 as well. Prior to completing your order, you will have an opportunity to review our full terms of sale, our Equipment Discount policy and the carrier's contract terms.
Q: Can I purchase a netbook without a data plan?
A: You may purchase a netbook without a data plan, but you will be limited to Wi-Fi hotspots and wired Ethernet cables for internet access, and you will pay the higher, non-subsidized price for the netbook.
Q: What if I don't like my netbook? What are the return and exchange policies?
A: Returns will be accepted within 30 days of shipment when customers follow our return policy.
