Today, Apple announced its updates and new releases, including the iPad Pro, Apple TV, and iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus. Here are the details from this highly anticipated event:
The event at San Francisco’s Bill Graham Civic Auditorium started off with an update about the Apple Watch. The Apple Watch will now come in gold and rose gold, and there are new sports bands options to choose from. Apple also announced the release of a wrap-around Hermes band, available for all fashionistas in October.
Apart from the visual changes, the watch will also include a couple new app changes, including the release of iTranslate, an app that allows you to speak a word and get a translation, and AirStrip, a tool for medical professionals. Apple’s “Maps” app will also now include transit directions.
Tim Cook went on to announce Apple’s new flagship iPad, the iPad Pro. This is Apple’s largest iPad at 12.9 inches with 5.6 million pixels, resulting in an extremely detailed, high resolution screen.
The iPad Pro is also much faster. With a new A9X 64-bit chip, it’s 1.8 times faster than the previous iPad’s CPU. The iPad Pro also sports a 10-hour battery life, a 4 speaker audio system, and weighs just over 1.5 lbs. It also has a rear-facing 8 mega-pixel iSight camera so you can take beautiful, crisp photos wherever you are.
Apple also announced the new Smart Keyboard to go with the iPad Pro. This keyboard, covered in Apple-woven fabric which forms to your fingers, allows you to easily type and doubles as a cover. The Smart Keyboard will cost $170.
In addition to the Smart Keyboard, Apple revealed something completely new to Apple users, the Apple Pencil. This low latency stylus feels like a real pencil and allows users to draw or write easily by detecting position, force, and tilt. It also features a lightning connector so that users can charge it directly to their iPad when not using it. The Apple pencil will cost $99.
The iPad Pro will come in 3 colors (silver, gold, and space gray), and it will be available in November. Pricing will start at $799 with 32GB of memory, $949 for 128GB of memory, and $1079 for 128GB and a cellular connection.
According to Tim Cook, “The future of television is apps.” And today’s unveiling of the new Apple TV showed how important those apps really are.
The new Apple TV runs on a new OS called tvOS and features a third-party App Store, new remote, and Siri controls.
The new black remote has a glass touch surface, so you can touch and swipe to navigate through your Apple TV. The Apple TV also allows you to relax by having Siri do most of the work for you. You can ask questions like “Siri, find me comedies with Jason Bateman” or “Show that Modern Family episode with Edward Norton.” Siri will even skip back 15 seconds and show you the captions when you ask “What did she just say?” Siri will search across all apps, and can even make movie and TV suggestions based on things like genre.
Apple also unveiled how apps would work on the new TV by showing how you can use the device to play multiplayer games (with Harmonix Beat Sports) or shop directly from your TV (with Gilt).
The Apple TV will be available in October and costs $149 for the 32GB version or $199 for the 64GB.
iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus
Apple unveiled two new updated iPhones today: the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus. These phones will be available in 4 colors: silver, gold space gray, and rose gold, and are made of aircraft-grade aluminum.
These phones will feature a 3D touch screen that recognizes gestures like pressing and holding, so users can “peek” and “pop” on various apps to get more options. Both phones will also come with a 12 megapixel iSight rear camera and 5-megapixel front facing camera, so users can take stunning pictures. Lastly, they will be powered by Apple’s new A9 core processor, so they will run faster than ever.
The iPhone 6S and 6S Plus will be priced the same as the previous generation, starting at $199 and $299 for the 16GB model. The previous versions (iPhone 6 and 6 Plus) will each drop $100. Apple also announced a new iPhone Upgrade program which lets users lease an iPhone for $32 a month and get a new version every year.
The new iPhones will go on pre-sale September 12th and will be available in stores on September 25th.
