According to a report recently published by TrendForce, it is quite possible that Apple may decide to do away with the 32 gigabyte edition for its highly awaited iPhone 8. This means that this year’s new iPhone models will be having a base model that features 64 gigabytes of built in memory at the minimum.
If this news turns out to be true, then it would not be unprecedented for for Apple. Some may remember that when the tech giant launched its iPhone 7 last year, it eliminated the 16 gigabyte edition of its flagship device, opting instead to start with 32 gigabytes as the least storage capacity configuration. For this year’s iPhone 8, however, Apple may dump the 32 gigabyte option and have the base model configured at 64 gigabytes. As for the other extreme, the maximum storage offered for the iPhone 8 is said to be 256 gigabytes.
Quite obviously, these changes will impact the pricing of the newest iPhone models. An iPhone 7 offering 256 gigabytes of onboard storage fetches around $849. It has already been rumored that the premium iPhone 8 will be priced at more than $1,000, on account of its OLED display screen. Moreover, the cheapest iPhone this year (at 64 gigabytes) will most certainly be pricier than last year’s base model.
Apart from speculation regarding the storage configurations of the upcoming iPhone 8, TrendForce’s report also sheds light on other rumors such as:
3 new iPhone models -- a 4.7 inch version, a 5.5 inch version, and a premium 5.8 inch version
The 4.7 inch and 5.5 inch versions will have LCD display screens
The high end 5.8 inch version will sport an AMOLED display, with a curved screen and 2K resolution; this premium version will also ditch the home button
The 4.7 inch version will have 2 gigabytes of random access memory (RAM), while the 5.5 inch and 5.8 inch versions will boast 3 gigabytes of RAM
Also, yesterday MacRumors reported that the iPhone 8’s camera module could be reinforced with a couple of depth sensing infrared modules. These infrared sensors would be able to recognize the location as well as the depth of objects, and may even be able to scan a person’s face. Also, last week, noted Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted that this year’s iPhone will come with a Touch Bar reminiscent of the one used on the MacBook Pro. Kuo also said that the iPhone 8 will have an area on its screen that will be reserved for virtual buttons.
