Alcatel debuted its OneTouch Watch earlier this year at the 2015 Consumer Electronics Show held in Las Vegas, Nevada. And now, the wearable device is officially available for preordering directly from Alcatel's US website at a price of $149.99.
Other high-profile smartwatch offerings -- like the Apple Watch and Motorola's Moto 360 -- may be hogging the limelight, but the Alcatel OneTouch Watch actually has something unique to offer. What makes the smartwatch different is the fact that it works with Android and iOS devices. This makes it one of the very few wearable devices out there that can work with both mobile operating systems.
The Alcatel OneTouch Watch comes with a 1.22 inch display screen with a 240 by 240 resolution. Its circular watch face measures in at 43 millimeters, and it will likely ship with a black colored sport band. Later this year, Alcatel is expected to provide more color options and even different styles for the band.
Alcatel's smartwatch generally features touch-based input capabilities. Users can take full advantage of the device's tapping interface via the home area that is located at the bottom of the round display screen, which is not too dissimilar from Motorola is doing with its Moto 360 smartwatch. The exterior bezel is marked with the numbers 3, 6, 9, and 12 to denote hour marks.
The Alcatel OneTouch Watch also features a hidden USB 2.0 port that is located in its band. This allows users to charge the wearable device to full power in just 60 minutes. That may not be mind blowing, but it does represent a different approach compared to the usual proprietary and induction chargers utilized by several device makers. When fully charged, the watch should be good for two to five days, depending on the level of usage.
Nobody really expects Alcatel's smartwatch to trump the Apple Watch in terms of functionality and design. But the OneTouch Watch does have a few things up its sleeve. When paired with an iPhone (iPhone 4S or newer, with at least iOS 7 or newer systems), it can control camera shutters, it can be used for music playback, and it can display notifications.
When used with devices that run on the Android mobile operating system (Android 4.3 or newer versions), it is expected to be more flexible especially in accessing features native to the OS.
Additionally, the Alcatel OneTouch Watch also features a heart rate sensor, an electronic campus, a gyroscope, an altimeter and a near field communications (NFC) tag. Furthermore, outdoor enthusiasts might be delighted to know that the smartwatch is IP67 water- and dust-resistant.
