As indicated in a research note recently released by Ming-Chi Kuo, the analyst from KGI Securities noted for the accuracy of his Apple related predictions, Apple is reportedly planning to discontinue one of its 2017 flagship devices, the iPhone X, later this year. Specifically, the plan involves cancelling the iPhone X as soon as its new and presumably upgraded second generation follow up is released some time during the second half of 2018.
While it is true that the world’s second biggest vendor of smartphones updates its iPhone lineup of devices on a yearly basis, it usually does not discontinue relatively recent iPhone models (more on this later). What it does instead is sell previous iPhone releases at discounted prices, especially when its latest flagship offerings hit store shelves everywhere. Everybody knows that iPhones are not that affordable -- but still, mobile users often wait for a year or so in order to take advantage of cheaper prices for last year’s models.
It goes without saying that the newest prediction from Kuo may not be delightful news for those looking to purchase the iPhone X, but just could not afford to buy one now. At a starting price of a thousand bucks, the iPhone X is the most expensive iPhone model to date. For those who do not have $1,000 to spare, waiting for a year for the iPhone X to become less pricey does seem like a good plan. That plan, however, could be in jeopardy if Kuo’s predictions become true (and just for the record, his predictions almost always are).
In his latest research note, Kuo pointed out that the relatively disappointing sales of the iPhone X may be one of the factors that will lead Apple to discontinue the model later this year. And while it is true that the tech giant normally does not cancel recent models, it is worth mentioning that about four years ago, it actually decided to cancel the iPhone 5, right after formally unveiling the model’s follow ups -- the iPhone 5s and the iPhone 5c. The iPhone 5 officially has the shortest lifespan of any iPhone model, with only twelve months of production.
