In terms of the total volume of mobile game downloads around the world, Google’s Android mobile operating system certainly enjoys the lion’s share. According to a report published by development firm Unity3D, Android has captured an outrageous 82 percent share of mobile games downloaded during the second quarter of this year. As for Apple’s iOS platform, it managed to account for 17 percent of mobile game downloads in the same period. Unity3D gathered its data based on over 4.4 billion installations of Unity powered mobile games across 1.7 billion devices around the world.
Going to specific countries, Android’s dominance could not be more clear. In Indonesia for instance, game downloads on Android powered mobile devices accounted for a share of 96 percent. Meanwhile, in countries such as Brazil and South Korea, Android enjoyed a 92 percent share of mobile game downloads.
It is no secret that mobile games are hot commodities among apps. When one looks at the total sales of the global mobile app market, games make up approximately 85 percent of the total sales, as pointed out by Unity3D. This is proof that the world’s mobile population definitely enjoys playing games on their mobile devices.
As for Android, it is easy to discern its dominance. After all, Google’s mobile operating system remains the most widely used platform for smartphones and tablet devices in the planet right now. And with emerging markets, such as India, just beginning to purchase lots of Android powered mobile devices, Android’s leadership in usage will likely continue. And so will its dominance in terms of mobile game downloads.
But that is not to say Apple’s iOS has completely bitten the dust. In Japan, iOS actually leads, commanding a pretty impressive 53 percent share when it comes mobile game downloads. When looking into iOS powered mobile devices, the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 5s were the most widely used devices with a combined 28 percent share of mobile game downloads. As for Apple’s most recent flagship devices, the iPhone 6s and the iPhone 6s Plus, they enjoyed shares of 15 percent.
Among mobile brands, Samsung was the undisputed king among Android phone makers, enjoying a 35 percent share. Not far behind is Huawei with a 6.3 percent share, effectively supplanting Xiaomi, who is now down to third place with a 6.1 percent share. Combined, Samsung and its fiercest rival Apple accounted for 45 percent of all mobile game downloads across the globe.
