Lovingly nicknamed "Donut," version 1.6 of Google's Android mobile operating system is scheduled to be available to Android-powered devices come October. "Donut" will include a number of new platform technologies, several new user features, and an updated Android Market.
Version 1.6 will bring CDMA support to Android devices as well as a text-to-speech engine. Developers will also be able to associate user gestures with specific actions and create accessibility plugins that respond to user input, such as making a sound when a new window is opened.
"Donut" will add the ability for users to search the web, contacts, bookmarks, and browser history directly from the home screen. An updated user interface will improve Android's camera experience by integrating the the gallery, camera, and camcorder while improving usability. Other new features include VPN access and a new battery usage indicator that allows users to determine what apps and services are consuming battery power.
The updated Android Market will enhance the overall user experience by improving the store's organization, making it easier for users to discover new applications. While browsing, users will also be able to see application screen shots and user reviews.
