As indicated in a new report recently released by App Annie, mobile app stores registered their best performance ever in terms of the number of downloads and revenue figures during the first three months of this year. In both Android and iOS mobile operating systems, the volume of downloads have increased by 15 percent year over year in order to hit almost 25 billion around the world. By the way, that 25 billion also includes new downloads, excluding re-installations or downloads made in previous quarters.
On top of this, mobile users across the globe also managed to increase their spending, growing 45 percent year over year during the first quarter of 2017, surpassing the $15 billionth mark across Android and iOS powered mobile devices. It is quite possible that what app developers have earned in Q1 2017 are even greater than the $15 billion spent by consumers. App Annie’s information, however, does not include the additional earnings generated from in-app advertising, or revenues derived from mobile commerce apps.
App Annie is quick to point out that much of the growth in revenues is due to the Chinese mobile market, which continues to get bigger, especially among iOS users. Not many people realize this but China is actually the top country in terms of iOS consumer spending, and because of that, it is also considered the biggest contributor to the growth of earnings on iOS. Based on App Annie’s data, it appears that China will remain number one on iOS for the next four years at least.
Meanwhile, Apple’s App Store continues to significantly outpace Google Play in terms of earnings. The App Store has increased its lead to 100 percent over Google Play during the first quarter of 2017, which is an improvement over the 90 percent lead it enjoyed during the same period the previous year.
But it bears noting that App Annie had reported a few weeks ago that Android is actually expected to beat iOS in terms of app store generated revenues in 2017. The app analytics firm’s prediction, however, is based on the assumption that third party Android app stores are included in the count. This is critical because, especially in the Chinese mobile market, wherein apps are offered in other Android app stores such as those offered by Huawei, Xiaomi, Tencent, and Baidu, just to name a few. By the end of this year, App Annie projects that these alternative Android app stores will generate $20 billion in earnings.
