Perhaps the reports of slow starts were nothing but rumors after all. According to Tim Cook, chief executive officer of Apple, the Apple Watch had a better showing than the original iPhone and iPad, in terms of immediate post-launch sales figures.
Cook also highlighted the fact that sales of Apple’s first and only wearable device (so far) were at its highest in the month of June, effectively negating the idea that the demand for the smartwatch had abated. But alas -- Cook, however, did not provide any actual sales numbers for the Apple Watch. And others may note that the circumstances are actually different -- the Apple Watch launched in nine countries across the world, while the original iPhone and iPad were launched in the United States only.
Over the past few weeks and months, lots of speculation has been brewing regarding how well the Apple Watch has been selling since it was launched back in April 24th earlier this year. And it did not help that Apple was rather mum on the subject of sales figures for its only wearable device. This led other parties to provide their own estimation of the Apple Watch’s sales figures to date.
For instance, last month, research firm Slice Intelligence estimated that Apple had sold 2.79 million Apple Watches since April, according to email receipts of customers who ordered the device online. Early this month, Slice Intelligence had stated that daily sales of the smartwatch had decreased 90 percent from the first week of sales to the start of July. Another research firm, Strategy Analytics, forecasted back in March of this year that Apple would ship 15.4 million Apple Watches this year. Ming-Chi Kuo, a KGI Securities analyst, echoed the 15 million estimate, while Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty expects Apple to sell 30 million units of the Apple Watch in the first 12 months after launch.
Regardless of the real sales figure for the Apple Watch, Cook remains as confident as ever regarding the company’s smartwatch offering. As a matter of fact, Cook is planning to further expand the current channel of Apple Watch units for the coming holiday season, in anticipation of a jump in demand for the device, which will surely make for a top present at the end of the year.
So far, as revealed by Cook, the Apple Watch can already run 8,500 apps, and with the introduction of the second version of the Watch OS software in the coming months, the device can only improve even more.
