For most of last year, fans of Apple were not that happy (well, compared to past years). You can not blame them actually -- 2016 only offered a limited number of updates to popular products, especially the Mac and the iPhone, whose latest model said goodbye to the headphone jack. On top of that, the normally proficient company had a few stumbles and questionable -- delaying the release of its AirPods wireless headphones and releasing a new Apple Watch that never really felt quite new.
But now that Apple has published its most recent quarterly report, it turned out that the tech giant was doing just fine after all. As a matter of fact, the company shattered some records during the final quarter of 2016 -- registering record sales for its iPhone and Apple Watch devices. Moreover, the mobile giant was able to put a stop to three consecutive quarters of decreasing sales.
And it is not just Apple’s gadgets that are earning well -- its services business (Apple Pay, Apple Music, iCloud, etc) registered a remarkable growth of 18 percent compared to the previous year’s. Sure, its iPad tablets are still struggling (now counting three straight years of declining earnings), but in all other aspects of its business, Apple seems to have done really well.
It is interesting to note because last year, everybody appeared to be thinking that 2016 would just be a rather uninspiring year for Apple. This all began with the iPhone fatigue thing, which did have a bad effect on Apple’s sales. But importantly, it got people (even Apple’s own fans) thinking that new iPhones do not offer much to be excited about anymore.
Intriguingly, the iPhone 7 was considered by many to be just an iterative update (because by 2017, Apple will be releasing the 10th year anniversary edition of its iPhone, which will probably blow people’s minds). It is somewhat true -- design wise, the iPhone 7 never really offers anything innovative compared to the iPhone 6 or the iPhone 6s. But the dual camera configuration of the iPhone 7 Plus was actually a nifty touch (on hindsight), and consumers responded by heading to the stores in droves, making Q4 2016 a unique quarter in Apple’s history, because people actually bought more iPhone 7 Plus models than the smaller iPhone 7 edition. Add some waterproofing and Apple got itself an iPhone hit for the ages.
Perhaps the lesson here is that one can never underestimate Apple and also, how Apple’s fans might actually respond in real life, never mind if it is contrary to what the industry experts are saying. But some may be wondering too -- what could have been if only Samsung did not mess up its phablet. We will never know for sure.
