Yup, you read that headline right. It was first reported by 9to5Mac, but a spokesperson from Apple has since officially verified that the tech giant is indeed now starting to accept trade ins for damaged iPhones. The company’s Apple Store Reuse and Recycle iPhone trade in program has always allowed iOS users to trade in their older iPhone models in exchange for store credit. The deal was previously only applicable if the user’s existing iPhone device was in good working condition, and with no cracked display screens or other defects. But apparently, Apple has decided to make changes to the program, which should be welcome news for those itching to trade in their damaged iPhones.
It is definitely a bummer when you damage your iPhone, especially when you do not always know the options available to you. The two most obvious options is to either have the device repaired, or purchase a new one. With the latest change in policy in Apple’s trade in program, users now have a third option -- trade in their damaged handset and save some money in the process.
It should be noted that the program only applies to models such as the iPhone 5s, the iPhone 6, and the iPhone 6 Plus. Also, trade ins must be facilitated in Apple’s retail stores, which means that interested parties will have to physically bring in their damaged iPhones. Obviously, online trade ins are a no-no.
As for the amount of store credit that is received in exchange for the damaged iPhone, it will depend on the nature and scope of the damage. According to the report by 9to5Mac, the program applies to iPhone devices with reasonably damaged display screens, cameras, and buttons. The trade in values for an iPhone 5s is $50; for the iPhone 6 it is $200, and for the iPhone 6 Plus it is $250.
Apple is also offering to help iPhone owners properly install a display screen protector for their devices. In collaboration with Belkin (and other partners), Apple Stores will help users fit the protective accessory via the use of specific machinery. Some retail outlets actually offer assistance in setting up protective accessories, but usually without using dedicated equipment. In Apple’s case, if the machine fails to install the accessory properly, the iPhone maker will cover the cost of purchasing a new one.
