Owners of iPhone devices should already be able to use Apple Pay Cash starting this week. The service is arriving by way of a new update that is part of iOS 11.2, which was rolled out just a few days ago. For those not familiar with Apple Pay Cash yet, it comes with a functionality that basically allows iOS mobile users to directly send payments via iMessage.
It was back in June earlier this year during the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) when Apple had first officially unveiled Apple Pay Cash, together with the formal introduction of iOS 11, the newest version of the tech giant’s popular mobile operating system. And while iOS 11 has since launched less than three months ago, the Apple Pay Cash feature was meant to follow as a later update to iOS 11.
For mobile users who are already using well known mobile payment apps such as PayPal, Square Cash, Venmo, the concept of Apple Pay Cash should not be so alien. With Apple Pay Cash, iPhone users can transfer funds to family or friends through a message or through the digital assistant Siri.
The cash being transferred is drawn from the credit or debit card tied to the customer’s Apple Wallet. When the recipient of the fund transfer receives the money, it will show up as an Apple Pay Cash card, which works similarly to a virtual gift card, and is saved in the Apple Wallet. The funds can then be transferred to the bank, or else stored in the handset, where as a gift card it can be used to pay for transactions that have support for Apple Pay.
It goes without saying that the full integration with iMessage makes things so much easier for those sending money to relatives, as opposed to having to launch another third party app to facilitate the transfer. More importantly for Apple, it should give iOS mobile users everywhere more reason to start taking full advantage of the tech giant’s mobile payment system. Apart from rolling out Apple Pay Cash, Apple also has plans to make the service available on the Apple Watch.
Apple Pay continues to evolve since it made its debut back in October of 2014. Despite contributing significantly in making more consumers become aware of various contactless modes of payment, Apple Pay and other mobile payment systems in general are still not close to becoming mainstream. But with features like Apple Pay Cash, adoption should continue to improve by next year.
