Launched over a week ago, the System and Security Info diagnostic app has been removed by Apple from the App Store. The app had featured in some headlines several days ago because of its ability to allow iOS users to monitor the central processing unit (CPU), memory, disk usage, and processes of their mobile devices. More importantly, the app could help users determine if their iPhone device had been jailbroken, accessed without their consent, or infected with malware and other potentially harmful mobile software.
But as revealed (by way of a series of tweets) from Stefan Esser, noted security researcher and iOS hacker from Germany and creator of the System and Security Info mobile app, Apple apparently does not want the app available in its app store. Apple, for its part, has reasoned out that it removed the app because it supplied possibly wrong and misleading diagnostic capabilities to devices powered by the company’s iOS mobile operating system. The iPhone maker further elaborated that to date, there is no existing infrastructure for looking into iOS related diagnostics, all the more reason for not trusting data provided by the System and Security Info app.
Everybody developer knows that Apple has established strict guidelines with regards to which mobile apps are allowed to be sold in the App Store. But the company has shown a history of inconsistency in its app screening and approval process. For instance, certain apps would be approved on the outset, appearing on the App Store for several days or weeks, even months, only to be removed later on.
Esser, of course, is not happy, and is even pointing out the unfairness of it all. It turns out that there are still mobile apps in Apple’s App Store that come with system diagnostics capabilities, but Apple has not removed any of them. Moreover, Esser thinks that Apple just waited for all the on-release media hype to subside before getting rid of the System and Security Info app.
