2017 not only saw Apple release three flagship devices -- the iPhone X, the iPhone 8, and the iPhone 8 Plus -- but also marked the first time that the tech giant had introduced iPhone models that came with full support for wireless charging capabilities. Back in September of last year, Apple had revealed that it was planning to introduce its own take on the concept of a wireless charging mat -- the AirPower.
Like any upcoming Apple product, the AirPower has already generated some buzz, and with good reason. This wireless charging mat is said to offer the ability to charge more than one mobile device simultaneously -- in other words, an iOS mobile user could charge his iPhone X, his Apple Watch Series 3 unit, and his AirPods using the AirPower.
When Apple had hinted that it was working on the AirPower last year, the general expectation was that the wireless charging mat would hit store shelves this year, maybe even in the first half of 2018. But according to a report recently published by Bloomberg, there is some indication that the timeframe of the AirPower’s release is going through some problems, which meant that its launch could be delayed. Per Bloomberg’s report, the AirPower was supposed to make its commercial debut this month, but it is now likely that the product will instead have a wide release in September later this year, possibly along with the AirPods wireless charging case, too.
So what exactly is causing the delay? As indicated in the Bloomberg report, apparently it has something to do with Apple’s engineering team trying to sort out several technical issues, including making sure the AirPower wireless charging mat does not overheat. Other issues vary from cramming in more than one charging sensor (which means that a multiple set up will entail some overlapping), to finalizing the firmware to be utilized for the custom Apple processor that will be handling power management tasks and facilitating the pairing with other Apple devices. The positive news is that the AirPower is said to be starting its testing phase -- still, the technical issues all suggest that manufacturing the technology is far from being a walk in the park, even for Apple’s technical wizardry.
Bloomberg’s report also took the opportunity to point out that while it is true that Apple has not announced a specific launch date for its AirPower, the tech giant has faced similar delays with regards to other new products, such as its AirPods and its HomePod speaker.
