The second biggest smartphone vendor in the world may still be dealing with some nagging battery related issues since December of last year, but it did something very right in the first day of 2018, or more accurately, its horde of fans did. On New Year’s Day, iOS mobile users spent a jaw dropping $300 million in purchases from Apple’s App Store. That figure is officially a new January 1st record for the iPhone maker, and represents a whopping 25 percent improvement over the previous year’s haul.
The App Store also registered stellar sales numbers for the entire holiday season. During a week long period that started on Christmas Eve, Apple’s online store for apps breached the $890 million mark. The purchase happy habits of iOS mobile users everywhere all throughout last year also resulted with iOS developers taking home $26.5 billion, which is equal to an improvement of over 30 percent compared to 2016’s numbers.
While it is generally known that Apple makes the most of its money from its iPhone devices, its earnings from its App Store are not to be underestimated. The great thing about selling mobile apps is that unlike smartphones and tablets, consumers are likely to purchase apps repeatedly, or at least at a more frequent rate than they do handsets. This creates a continuous and more regular source of income for Apple. And because its App Store is almost a decade old now (it started just one year after the original iPhone was released back in 2007), it is basically an institution now, considered by any Apple user as the only place to go to online when looking for an app for one’s iPhone or iPad. iOS developers also have plenty of reason to be thankful to the App Store -- after all, they have earned over $86 billion to date in the last nine years.
It helps, of course, that Apple has decided to give its App Store a major overhaul less than four months ago. With the roll out of iOS 11, the latest version of the tech giant’s mobile operating system, it also took the opportunity to redesigned its online store for apps, making it even easier for Apple’s legion of users to discover new apps and games on a weekly basis. With the App Store’s new Today, Games and Apps tabs, consumers were able to discover certified blockbuster hit titles such as Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, Monument Valley 2, King of Glory, Calm and Affinity Photo.
