According to Kantar Worldpanel's report, in the three months spanning December 2014 to February 2015, Apple's iPhones have grabbed more than a quarter (27.6 percent, to be exact) of the smartphone market in China.
That percentage not only puts Apple in the number one sport among smartphone makers, it also marks a new all-time high for the tech giant in terms of sales performance in the Chinese market. This is really quite an achievement for Apple, considering the strong competition it is facing in China, especially from the country's own homegrown phone makers. Apple has even managed to beat Xiaomi in its own turf, sending the Chinese phone maker to second place, which is remarkable considering that Xiaomi generally offers smartphones that are priced less than iPhones.
It does not hurt that more than half (59 percent) of iPhone sales consist of subscribers under China Mobile, which happens to be China's leading wireless carrier and perhaps the world's biggest in terms of subscriber base. It goes without saying that Apple really did make a sound decision when it inked a deal with the Chinese carrier more than a year ago in December 2013, which led to Apple getting access to China Mobile's nearly 800 million subscribers (and counting).
According to Kantar Worldpanel's report, the iPhone 6 remains the best selling phone in China, improving its share to 10.2 percent compared to the previous quarter's 9.5 percent. Its bigger sibling, the iPhone 6 Plus, sits nicely on the third spot just behind Xiaomi's RedMI Note handset.
For other regions in the world, Kantar's Worldpanel's report shows that the iPhone 6 still leads the pack in the United States. However, overall iOS sales have dipped from 39.3 percent from the previous quarter to 38.8 percent in the latest quarter. In Europe's five major markets, iOS sales rose by 2.9 percent to 20.9 percent. In Japan, iOS takes a 49.8 percent, but it is actually down by 5.1 percent compared to the previous quarter's in the Japanese market.
Will Apple be able to keep its momentum in the next quarter? It is hard to tell at the moment, considering the many new Android flagship devices (courtesy of Samsung, HTC, and LG) being introduced into the market.
