PayPal users rejoice! Apple is now supporting PayPal on its online store, which means that customers can now purchase their iPhone or iPad using their PayPal accounts. On top of that, Apple is also pushing PayPal's own credit system, which allows buyers who use the system to pay off a purchased item up to 18 months with zero interest.
Previously, buyers can only pay for Apple products and accessories purchased online using a credit card, a special financing plan, or an Apple Store gift card. But now when customers order something from Apple's online store, they will be able to see PayPal included in the list of additional payment options. Once PayPal is selected when making a purchase, Apple's online store will direct buyers to PayPal's website, where they can log in and confirm their purchase.
As of this writing, the PayPal option is only made available on Apple's website. So if you check on the Apple Store mobile iOS app, you will not be able to find PayPal listed as an extra payment option there. Moreover, PayPal is only available on Apple's online store in the United States and in the United Kingdom.
Many had seen this development coming. Apple after all has offered PayPal as a payment option for its digital goods stores such as the App Store and the iTunes Music store.
And the fact that Apple is open to integrating PayPal in its hardware store online suggests that the tech giant is not that keen about monopolizing the field of payment systems. On the contrary, it appears Apple is more concerned about incorporating stuff that provides the most convenience for its customers, especially those who buy Mac and iOS devices. It is true that Apple has its own Apple Pay system, but it seems that the mobile payment system it developed is more likely there to entice customers to buy Apple products, not to be the sole means for facilitating payment.
Apple is no doubt thinking that a customer with plenty of payment options is a purchase-happy customer. And together with PayPal's 18 month pay off scheme with zero interest, the company is giving every incentive to get consumers to make a purchase, especially those who might be reluctant because of limited payment options.
As for PayPal -- well, it gets to have access to one of the largest online retailers in the US. And considering that we are well into the holiday season, PayPal could see its users increase their purchasing online, especially now that they can get their Apple presents for the holidays using the PayPal system.
