Apple recently announced that it has sold 13 million units of its latest iPhone models -- the iPhone 6s and the iPhone 6s Plus -- over the weekend. This opening weekend sales number is officially a new record for the iPhone maker, breaking the record set by last year’s iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, which sold 10 million units combined. The year before in 2013, Apple’s best opening weekend at that time was 9 million units for the iPhone 5s and the iPhone 5c combined.
Unlike the previous year, Apple has decided to launch the iPhone 6s and the iPhone 6s Plus in the Chinese market on launch day. In 2014, the tech giant had opted to release the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus in China a couple of weeks after its launch in the United States. Interestingly, back in 2013, the iPhone 5s and the iPhone 5c were made available in the Chinese market on day one. But 2015 proved to be a different, stronger beast for Apple altogether.
13 million units sold over the weekend is by any measure an amazing feat. That number is easily equivalent to Apple selling 3,000 units of its newest iPhone devices every minute, or about 50 smartphones per second. Apple has decided not to publish any sales figures under its new iPhone Upgrade Program, which allows mobile users to purchase a handset under a 24 month payment plan, with an option to upgrade to a new iPhone model each year, starting at $32 monthly for the 16 gigabyte edition of the iPhone 6s.
Apple also took the opportunity to reveal that it is making the iPhone 6s and the iPhone 6s Plus devices available in 40 additional countries -- starting on October 9th, the devices will launch in Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Greece, Greenland, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Isle of Man, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Maldives, Mexico, Monaco, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and Taiwan; starting on October 10th, the devices will launch in Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and United Arab Emirates. To date, Apple is planning to launch its latest iPhone models in 130 countries within the remainder of this year. Previously, Apple had announced that it was on track to surpass 2014’s record based on the number of preorders for the new iPhone devices.
The iPhone 6s and the iPhone 6s Plus may only be considered as “S” iPhones, but they do come with a few interesting enhancements. For instance, they are equipped with an improved camera, a processor with significant upgrades in terms of speed and power efficiency, an enhanced Touch ID, and do not forget 3D Touch, a new touch screen interaction technology that allows for pressure sensitive tapping.
