In this year’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), not only did Apple officially unveil the latest version of its iOS mobile operating system (the feature laden iOS 10, which will only work with a certain lineup of Apple devices), the tech giant also had its chief executive officer, Tim Cook, and other top Apple executives deliver some big numbers and statistics. Indeed, despite iPhone fatigue and slumping sales, Apple remains quite a formidable player, as these numbers show.
In the area of mobile apps, Cook revealed that there a couple of apps currently listed in the Apple App Store. All these apps are responsible for racking up a total 130 billion number of downloads. Highlighting the role that app developers play in Apple’s business, Cook also shared that $50 billion has been paid to these code warriors.
Later during the conference, Cook returned to the stage in order to reveal that ever since introducing its Swift programming language back in 2014, about a hundred thousand mobile apps, even familiar ones like Lyft, have all adopted Swift. The language is now even considered the most widely used language on GitHub, a platform that hosts code. Cook would then shift to announcing Swift Playground, a coding education mobile app made available absolutely free of charge.
Some may remember tvOS, the operating system that Apple developed purposely for its Apple TV device. Launched last year, the first generation came with 80 channels. But now, tvOS has over 1,300 channels and 600 native apps, as revealed by Eddy Cue, the senior vice president of Internet software and services at Apple. tvOS actually works with Siri, which makes Apple’s digital assistant able to search over 650,000 films and TV series on Apple TV.
Cue also took the opportunity to shed some light on the popularity of the Apple Music service. Incredibly, Apple’s music streaming subscription service has managed to accumulate 15 million paid subscribers, basically making Apple Music the fastest music service ever in its first year. Cue also said that Apple News now has 60 readers every month, all perusing its 2,000 publications of content.
Craig Federighi, the senior vice president of software engineering at Apple, also revealed that there are 10 billion documents now in iCloud Drive. Federighi further explained that this 10 billion volume will likely increase, especially with features such as optimized storage, which is capable of automatically transferring a user’s old files to the cloud.
