As reported by The Information, it is quite possible that Apple is planning in the near future to bundle all of its media services into one subscription. Perhaps the most visible or the most familiar of the tech giant’s media offerings is Apple Music, but some may not realize that the iPhone maker has also poured investments in other media ventures.
For instance, less than a couple of weeks ago it was reported that Apple had struck a multiple year agreement with the US talk show queen herself, Oprah Winfrey. With this collaboration, Apple will work with the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) in order to develop original programs to be offered by Apple. Among other things, Apple has also secured the distribution rights for a limited mystery series inspired by girl reporter Hilde Lysiak, children’s shows produced by the Sesame Workshop, and the Little America immigrant anthology series.
Apart from TV content, Apple may also be looking to offer news content. This should not be that surprising, considering that back in March early this year, the company did complete its acquisition of Texture, which is a service that allows consumers to download and read magazines by signing up for a paid subscription. To date, Texture already has ties with Conde Nast, Hearst, Meredith, News Corp, Rogers Communications, and Time Inc.
But the more important question for some is this -- how exactly will Apple distribute this growing range of media content offerings? Well, the company could decide to offer a bundled subscription, which should marry its music, TV, and news offerings into one package. There is an argument that this could prove easier for Apple (and for consumers), as opposed to a set up that offers three different subscriptions separately.
The unified subscription should work similarly to Amazon’s Prime. Users will be able to gain access to Apple Music, Apple TV video content, and Apple News content by paying a monthly charge, or an annual fee. Interestingly, Apple would not be the only one to think of this approach -- for instance, its rival Google has after all overhauled its YouTube premium plans in order to include music and original video streaming offerings. Even Spotify is said to be considering increased involvement in offering video content.
Obviously, the world of digital media content is already pretty crowded -- if Apple will indeed enter into this business, for sure it will have to compete with already established brands such as Netflix and Hulu, and even traditional TV giants such as AT&T (who has acquired Time Warner) and Comcast.
