Many an industry watcher is expecting the Apple Watch to be a hit (at least in smartwatch sales standards). But no one knows for sure just how many units Apple's first ever wearable device will sell once it hits stores everywhere starting April 24th of this year.
Of course, that has not stopped analysts from offering sales figures forecasts anyway. One of them is Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster. In a note to investors, Munster predicted that Apple will sell 1 million units of the Apple Watch on its first weekend.
Furthermore, Munster also believes that the industry will see very strong preorder sales figures for the wearable device beginning April 10th. He expects Apple to receive 300,000 preorders in the first 24 hours, as stated in the note.
Smartwatches are nothing new. As a matter of fact, companies such as Motorola, Samsung, LG, and Pebble have already released their own smartwatch offerings way before Apple. But none has garnered as much attention as the Apple Watch has. Some industry experts are even postulating that Apple's smartwatch could be the one that propels wearable devices to the mainstream. It is not like Apple has not done this before. Several years back, it did the same thing with music players (with the launch of its iPod) and mobile phones (with the launch of its iPhone).
The Apple Watch was first unveiled by Apple in September of last year, alongside its latest flagship smartphones, the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus, now considered two of the best-selling smartphones of all time. Apple's smartwatch is available in three basic varieties -- the entry level Apple Watch Sport which starts at $349, the midrange Apple Watch that goes for $549, and the premium priced Apple Watch Edition which can fetch $17,000 or higher.
Needless to say, much is riding on the success of the Apple Watch launch. And it is quite ironic that perhaps other smartwatch makers, basically competitors to Apple, are hoping that the company's wearable device will sell. If it does, it will surely make smartwatches in general and other wearable devices fly off the store shelves as well.
