AT&T has launched a new, limited time only roaming add-on in celebration of the 2016 Summer Olympics to be held in the city of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. Subscribers of the second biggest wireless carrier in the United States who have plans of going to Brazil to see the 31st Olympic Games now have the option of adding the AT&T Passport Brazil Summer Package to their postpaid mobile plan. The add-on comes with 1 gigabyte of cellular roaming data for use while in Brazil, plus unlimited data use at more than a thousand Wi-Fi hotspots.
On top of that, the AT&T Passport Brazil Summer Package also features half an hour of voice calls within Brazil, and from Brazil to any other nation, including the US. Rio de Janeiro bound subscribers also get to enjoy unlimited text messaging within Brazil, as well as unlimited international text messaging to more than 190 additional nations.
Coming at a one time fee of $50, the AT&T Passport Brazil Summer Package will be made available to subscribers within the period of June 22nd to September 18th of this year. What makes the package so flexible is that it grants mobile users the option of selecting a start date for their add-on, which means that they can choose to avail of the package in advance before booking a flight to the Cidade Maravilhosa.
Note that the subscriber’s account will be billed $50 on the selected start date, and the roaming plan is good for the next 30 days. After the 30 days period however, AT&T’s roaming add-on will expire, and mobile users will no longer be able to renew if they want another 30 days of data, voice calls, and text messaging. Overages (in excess of the 1 gigabyte of data allotment) are charged at $0.20 for each megabyte. Overages for voice calls are similarly billed at $0.20 a minute.
For those with plans to travel to Brazil to see the 2016 Olympic Games but are not subscribed to AT&T, they can still avail of alternative options. Verizon Wireless has TravelPass, which allows people to use their plan’s talk, text, and data inclusions while in Brazil without having to worry about additional roaming fees, albeit users will have to pay $10 a day every time they use their handset. For T-Mobile customers, the wireless carrier gives them access to unlimited 2G data and unlimited text messaging in Brazil by way of its Simple Choice plan, with voice calls billed at $0.20 a minute. Lastly, Sprint’s Global Roaming package covers Brazil, and offers unlimited text messaging, unlimited 2G data, and voice calls at $0.20 a minute. Customers are also free to add 3G high speed data packs, whose prices start at $15 for a one day pass with 100 megabytes.
