AT&T’s unlimited options include the Unlimited Plus, a high end plan that comes with a price of $90, and Unlimited Choice, a more affordable plan at $60 (but with connection speeds limited to 3 mbps and video content streamed at 480p standard def). These options are not bad, but in the ongoing unlimited data wars, no deal ever remains the same for long, because one’s rivals will always try to one up the latest offer. While it is true that AT&T sits at a very comfortable spot just behind industry leader Verizon Wireless, it is still a good idea to not sit idly by while its competitors are launching new promos here and there.
So to liven things up, AT&T has decided to offer a $10 DirecTV subscription as an inclusion in its Unlimited Choice option. Of course, this has the effect of bringing the plan’s pricing up to $70 (after a $25 video credit -- more on this later). Note that the $10 DirecTV offer was only made available to subscribers of the wireless carrier’s Unlimited Plus option before. As for the $25 video credit -- according the official press release from AT&T, the $25 video credit, and hence the $10 DirecTV subscription, will be applied after three billing cycles.
The decision to include the DirecTV feature on its Unlimited Choice plan is an interesting move for AT&T in more ways than one. The major US mobile operator’s rivals seem to be content with introducing new special offers that include updated pricing or extra add on features. But AT&T, on the other, appears to be more focused on adding more video related perks. All things considered, this focus on video does seem consistent with its plan to be more than just a wireless carrier, and turn itself into a media powerhouse, as evidenced by its acquisition of DirecTV as well as its pending buy out of Time Warner.
The recent weeks and months have seen AT&T get busy when it comes to unlimited. Back in February early this year, the company provided unrestricted wireless data to subscribers of its Unlimited Choice option. And then the following month, it decided to give free HBO to its Unlimited Plus customers. And now, Unlimited Choice customers now get a chance to enjoy 60 TV channels along with their unlimited data plan.
