And the unlimited wars continue to intensify -- AT&T has just announced that it will be giving all subscribers of its Unlimited Plus plan access to HBO, absolutely free of charge. According to the second biggest wireless carrier in the United States, the free HBO deal will be offered to customers who sign up for Unlimited Plus, whether or not they also pay for the company’s DirecTV service.
Any Unlimited Plus customer who already pays for HBO by way of U-verse or DirecTV will have his fee eliminated. As for those Unlimited Plus customers who subscribe to a video service offered by AT&T (such as DirecTV) but not HBO, their subscription will automatically be upgraded to include HBO. Finally, an Unlimited Plus customer who is not subscribed to an AT&T video service will be given access to HBO content via the DirecTV Now mobile app or the HBO Go mobile app.
For those not familiar with the Unlimited Plus option offered by AT&T, it has a price of $90 (for one line of service), and already comes with 10 gigabytes of tethering for each handset (beyond the 10 gigabyte limit, the connection speeds will be throttled to 128 kbps), plus the ability to connect a tablet and other devices for $20 per month. Moreover, subscribers of Unlimited Plus can also enjoy discount prices on DirecTV features.
This new promo launches as AT&T’s acquisition of Time Warner (the parent company of HBO) for a sum of $84.5 billion remains to be pending. Despite many industry watchers pointing out the absence of major regulatory blocks, the purchase is yet to be completed. Stlll, the parties involved in the deal are expecting the acquisition to push through before the end of 2017. When done, the deal would effectively merge the number two mobile operator in America with a media giant, and possibly encourage more promo bundles that combine mobile plans with entertainment packages.
AT&T’s latest special offer also comes at a time when Wall Street analysts have lowered their projections for the first three months of 2017, mainly because of the increased level of competition among mobile operators. Jefferies, for instance, has reduced its expectations for AT&T’s first quarter earnings a share from $0.77 to $0.74, and then lowered its estimates for the carrier’s postpaid net additions from 112,000 to 72,000, on account of rather disappointing device sales as well as the discontinuation of its 2G network.
