We've seen him before, and "Seth the Blogger Guy with AT&T" certainly looks friendly enough. Unfortunately for the AT&T spokesperson, his mission this time is to address YouTubers in an effort to respond to mounting criticism of the wireless carrier for missing its self-imposed "late summer" deadline to enable multimedia messaging service (MMS) functionality on the iPhone.
Braving a fury of YouTube comments with the seemingly obligatory use of the word "FAIL" (or some other not-so-kind four letter words), Seth begins in a relatively somber tone.
"Look, we see the discussions on the web -- on blogs, on Twitter, on Facebook -- so we thought it would be a good idea to take what's being said head on."
Putting AT&T squarely on the defensive, the three minute video entitled AT&T Network 101 & MMS Availability Update, proceeds to detail the surge in smartphone use and explain the strain that the resulting data requirements have put on AT&T's network.
Citing a 300-percent growth in Smartphone use year over year, Seth explains that preparing AT&T's network for iPhone MMS functionality and strengthening the network to support such a "dramatic increase" in smartphone use is both time consuming and costly.
"Put simply, we're working around the clock to enhance and expand our network to meet these challenges. Over the past two years we've invested some 38 billion dollars to enhance our wireless networks."
As of late, AT&T has come under intense public siege, fending off criticisms for reportedly poor network functionality and its failure to support MMS functionality and tethering for the wildly popular Apple iPhone.
