It appears that it might already be possible for iOS mobile users who have access to the cardless automated teller machines (ATMs) that Bank of America rolled out earlier in 2016 to withdraw money from said machines by way of the Apple Pay contactless mode of payment installed in their iPhone devices.
It was back in January earlier this year when reports surfaced saying that Bank of America’s ATMs will begin to have support for Apple’s mobile payment system. But just recently, a Reddit user who goes by the Internet handle WhatWhatTech is claiming that he was able to successfully make use of Apple Pay to withdraw cash from his account through a certain ATM located in the city of Redondo Beach in California.
The cardless ATMs deployed by Bank of America all come with an NFC logo located just beside their card slot. When iOS mobile users tap their iPhone device on that logo, they will be prompted to supply their personal identification number (PIN) before the screen shows all possible transaction choices.
It should be noted that this feature has not been officially rolled out for all of Bank of America’s cardless ATMs. Moreover, users can only withdraw money from the ATMs if they are using a Bank of America card. Also, there is no support yet for depositing cash by way of Apple Pay. Lastly, this feature seems to only work with Bank of America cards, and not any other bank. Using another bank’s card with Apple Pay, for instance, will lead to the ATM flashing an error. Still, support for cash withdrawal, even in a limited number of Bank of America ATMs, is a step in the right direction, and things can only improve from here on.
As indicated in the official website of Bank of America, the cardless ATMs that it rolled out now also have support for Samsung Pay. Back in May of this year, it was revealed that the machines had support for Android Pay, too. Bank of America also has stated that Consumer Debit Cards, US Trust Debit Cards, and Small Business Debit Cards (owner card only) are supported. And remember that in light of the fact that mobile payment systems are a relatively new concept (at least, for most users out there), there is bound to be some hiccups along the way, never mind that Bank of America is surely trying to figure things out at its end.
