Highly unlikely, it seems. As recently reported by the folks at 9to5Mac, the 2017 iPhone models (the iPhone X, the iPhone 8, and the iPhone 8 Plus) happen to have received specific hardware updates that facilitate more effective battery power management tools that should minimize the occurrence of random battery shutdowns.
Earlier this week, Apple had responded to a letter of inquiry written by Senator John Thune (a Republican from South Dakota, and the chairman of the Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee), and the tech giant had vowed that from now on, it would try to be more transparent about how it goes about dealing with old iPhone batteries and its processing performance optimization methods (apart from exploring the idea of rebates).
And it appears that the company is keeping true to its promise. First spotted by 9to5Mac on the iOS 11.3 beta, the upcoming iOS software update roll out should come with a Battery Health system preference screen, plus a Performance Management section. Indeed, owners of older iPhone devices should start to see a new Peak Performance Capability section included in the Battery Health screen, wherein they can check for themselves how their iPhone’s battery is faring in terms of the level of maximum capacity. On top of that, users can also ascertain if iOS is doing a performance management adjustment because of any unexpected battery shutdown.
9to5Mac also took the opportunity to note in its report that every Apple handset that upgrades to the upcoming new iOS version will start with the power management system deactivated by default. It should be mentioned though that once the device shuts down unexpectedly, that power management system will automatically be activated.
Just to be clear, the iPhone models likely to make full use of the power management system will include the iPhone 6, the iPhone 6 Plus, the iPhone 6s, the iPhone 6s Plus, the iPhone SE, the iPhone 7, and the iPhone 7 Plus.
Going back to last year’s iPhone models, the hardware updates on the iPhone X, the iPhone 8, and the iPhone 8 Plus are far smarter and more advanced compared to older models. Because it is very unlikely that any one of Apple’s current flagships will experience a battery shutdown, owners will never have to worry about their iPhone’s processing speed getting compromised in any way.
For those who need more information, it might be a good idea to go visit Apple’s official support web page with regards to iPhone battery and performance.
