After launching in April, Research In Motion's (RIM) BlackBerry App World has doubled its offerings since its first month of being open for business, reaching 2,000 applications ready for download.
To be sure, the growing application library has given RIM's popular line of BlackBerry smartphones a wealth of new functionality. However, 2,000 is a far cry from the 50,000+ applications available for Apple's iPhone. RIM executives said they are still "very happy" with the selection and volume of App World downloads, though they declined to give an exact figure on apps downloaded.
Much of the iPhone's contemporary strength arguably lies in the enormous amount of added functionality provided by its formidable selection of applications, and some analysts note that RIM is still at a "competitive disadvantage."
With over a billion application downloads worldwide between the iPhone and iPod Touch, RIM certainly has some catching up to do, but appears to be making up some ground.
