In the world of mobile, everybody knows that Samsung and Apple are the undisputed biggest sellers of smartphone devices across the globe. But not everybody knows that Chinese phone makers, such as Huawei, Oppo, and Xiaomi, are continuing to close the gap, albeit slowly, and Canalys has the numbers to prove it.
In the analyst firm’s report recently released just this week, it appears that number three phone maker, Huawei, is gaining on number two phone maker, Apple. According to Canalys’ data, Huawei managed to record a shipment volume of 38 million units during the second quarter of this year. Apple’s shipment numbers? During Q2 2017, they are at 41 million units. By shipping 38 million units of smartphone devices, Huawei also registered a year over year improvement of 20 percent. Apple may have edged Huawei in smartphone shipments, but its year over year growth is only at 2 percent. Nevertheless, Apple still revealed very impressive revenues earlier this week, and heading into the busy holiday shopping season, the tech giant is looking at another banner year, with anticipation for its upcoming iPhone 8 offering very high.
When it comes to showing some growth, Oppo and Xiaomi may have the best numbers during the second quarter of 2017. Oppo (now ranked fourth in the world) posted a 44 percent growth in its smartphone shipments, while Xiaomi (ranked fifth) displayed a 52 percent growth in units shipped. Last month, Canalys had pointed out how Xiaomi performed really well in its native homeland China, shipping 15 million units of smartphone devices in Q2 2017.
As for industry leader Samsung, it comfortably shipped over 79 million units of smartphone devices during the second quarter of this year. Canalys is quick to note, however, that the South Korean tech giant’s year over year growth was more or less flat, and its global shipment share is being affected by the strong showing of Chinese phone makers.
During Q2 2017, over 340 million units of smartphones have been shipped around the world. That number represents an improvement of nearly 4 percent year over year. Although Canalys cautions that mobile markets in China and India have both showed some decline during the second quarter of the year.
It is a different story altogether in the North American mobile market, however. According to Canalys’ report, the volume of smartphones shipped during Q2 2017 in the region improved about 7 percent year over year. Sales of Apple’s iPhone devices also increased by 10 percent.
