According to a report recently published by South Korean publication The Bell, Apple is apparently considering putting OLED display screens on all of its iPhone models by 2019. To date, rumors are already circulating that this year’s highly awaited iPhone 8 will sport an OLED display on an edge to edge screen. Moreover, other reports seem to support this idea, with the tech giant reportedly already inking a couple of multibillion dollar agreements with Samsung, who will be serving as the supplier of the AMOLED display screens.
For the longest time, Apple has only taken full advantage of LCD display screens for its iPhone devices. There is some speculation that the phone maker may even decide to stick to using LCD displays for the upcoming iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus models, which are also expected to be released later this year. But in the next few years, iOS mobile users better start getting used to iPhones with OLED display screens.
As reported by The Bell, sources in Apple’s supply chain have stated that production of OLED display screens only account for 40 percent of iPhones in 2017. By 2018, however, that figure is projected to grow two fold, and may even increase to a hundred percent before this decade is over. Naturally, Apple will start to gradually phase out the old LCD display screens, and this will likely happen once the company begins to launch new models with OLED displays only.
It goes without saying that due to the fact that we are talking about one of the best selling smartphone devices around the world, the production of OLED display screens will certainly ramp up. Companies who build OLED displays, like Samsung, Interflex, and BH, have already started expanding their manufacturing plants in Asia.
Because OLED display screens are quite a new technology, manufacturing them is still considered a bit challenging, not to mention costly, at least when compared to LCD display screens. This is why it is not surprising that the iPhone 8 is currently rumored to come with a much lofty pricing compared to older iPhone models. However, once manufacturers continue to expand and streamline their operations, OLED displays could become the new norm, especially for high end smartphone releases. The Bell further reports that OLED producers will likely begin delivering the first batches next month or the next.
