Fashion guru Tom Ford has created a new, unique version of the Apple Watch, the first and only wearable device so far produced by Apple. And his version is not made to be worn on the wrist. Instead, he is introducing a pocket watch version of perhaps the world's most popular smartwatch.
Ford's customized Apple Watch was spotted by a few notable fashion journalists. One of them was Matthew Schneier who reports for the New York Times. During an event held at the recent London Collections fashion week, Schneier took a picture of Ford's pocket Apple Watch and then shared it on his Twitter account.
Perhaps Ford's Apple Watch was in keeping with his 2016 spring collection, which featured three piece suits inspired by the dapper image of movie history's most distinguished gentlemen stars. Ford specifically mentioned Steve McQueen (combined with Paul Newman), from the classic heist movie The Thomas Crown Affair.
As reported by the Financial Times, Ford opened his collection with three piece suits, with the waistcoat adorned with a watch fob. On the fob was attached an Apple Watch. Interestingly, the celebrated fashion designer was quoted as saying that he was not that interested in wearing the Apple Watch. For the record, Ford actually wears a watch made by Cartier. But he did state that he would instead wear the Apple Watch on a fob.
This latest development perhaps has some people wondering -- what happens to the Apple Watch if you do not wear on your wrist? Of course, some functionality may be limited when the wearable device is removed from the wrist. The most obvious casualty is probably the health and fitness tracking features, whose sensors are extract information from the user's wrist.
On the other hand, taking the Apple Watch from your wrist and into, say, your breast pocket may have the potential to work. Perhaps, if the clothes one is wearing have a breast pocket that is close enough to the user's chest, the Apple Watch could still be used to track (or share to other users) one's heartbeat.
Well, fashion has always been a mind blogger for some, especially for techie guys. But you can not deny that there are some users who want to be trendy both in technology and in fashion. Marrying both areas may have no doubt crossed their minds. It is difficult to say for now if Tom Ford's version of the Apple Watch is a good example of melding tech and fashion. But if this pocket Apple Watch is what people want to wear (and flaunt) -- functionality be damned -- why not?
