Back in April earlier this year, DisplayMate had named Samsung’s flagship device, the Galaxy S8, as the smartphone with the first ever A+ grade in terms of the quality of the display. More than four months later, the firm is now recognizing the screen of the South Korean tech giant’s latest phablet offering, the Galaxy Note 8, as the one to beat.
As you may have heard already, Samsung officially introduced the Galaxy Note 8 a week ago. The debut of this device is more intriguing than usual, mainly because of the Galaxy Note 7 disaster last year, and many are no doubt interested to see if the biggest seller of smartphones in the world can finally get a move on via the Galaxy Note 8. It bears noting that its overheating battery issues aside, the Galaxy Note 7 actually had a pretty impressive display screen in its own right.
But the Galaxy Note 8 is taking a few things further compared to its ill fated predecessor. For one, its huge 6.3 inch AMOLED display delivers aplenty in terms of brightness. According to the report recently released by DisplayMate, the Galaxy Note’s screen is 22 percent brighter than the Galaxy S8. As a matter of fact, the phablet’s display offers a maximum brightness level of 1,240 nits. At most, the Galaxy S8 is only capable of 1,000 nits, and Apple’s iPhone 7 (which had gained high praise from DisplayMate last year) comes with a maximum brightness of 705 nits.
And because of its bigger screen size, as well as its more generous aspect ratio (at a whopping 18.5 to 9), the Galaxy Note 8 marks the first time a Samsung phablet has achieved a resolution of 3K QHD+ (specifically, 2,960 by 1,440 pixels). Also, photos are rendered with enhanced sharpness thanks to the display’s Diamond Pixels and sub-pixel rendering with 521 pixels per inch (ppi).
The overall quality of the Galaxy Note 8’s display has allowed the device’s screen to garner a grade of Excellent A+, which is a new record high among all smartphone releases to date, and is better than this year’s Galaxy S8 and last year’s Galaxy Note 7. And when we say overall quality, this encompasses areas such as brightness, outdoor visibility, and color gamut. Speaking of color gamut, the Galaxy Note 8 surpasses that of the Galaxy S8 by offering 112 percent of DCI-P3 and 141 percent of sRGB, rendering movies and games in colors the filmmakers and game creators originally intended.
