When Samsung’s newest flagship devices -- the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8 Plus -- debuted back in March early this year, the handsets generated some buzz because of its Infinity display screen (among many other things). But all that screen real estate also means that the latest additions to the South Korean phone maker’s Galaxy lineup of smartphones will be vulnerable to cracks, especially if in the hands of a rather accident prone owner.
It is a good thing that the world’s biggest seller of smartphone devices also offers an Active variant of its flagship offerings, and this particular model is designed to be more durable. Samsung also manufactures Active models for its tablet devices, and like the smartphone equivalents, they usually include better water proofing, dust resistance, and even drop resistance capabilities.
Samsung has launched various Active smartphone models before, with the latest one, the Galaxy S7 Active, having been released last year. Like earlier Active offerings, the Galaxy S7 Active is made more bulky, and comes with more physical buttons compared to the regular Galaxy S7. But the bottomline is: the user still basically gets the same core Galaxy experience but on a tougher shell.
This year, many are expecting an Active variant for the Galaxy S8, and based on documents found on Samsung’s official website, it appears that Galaxy fans with active lifestyles will be getting such an edition. Rumors of an Active edition of the Galaxy S8 are nothing new -- back in April earlier this year, reports have surfaced that a Galaxy S8 Active device will be coming exclusively to major US wireless carrier AT&T some time this year (more on this later).
To be perfectly clear, the documents do not actually mention anything about a release date. But based on past Active launch schedules, it is usually during a June or July of any given year. Barring any significant departure from its routine, it may be safe to assume that the Galaxy S8 Active will debut in the next few weeks.
As stated earlier in this article, there is a strong likelihood that the upcoming Galaxy S8 Active will be offered as an AT&T exclusive. Of course, it is quite possible that some fans of Samsung’s Galaxy devices under a mobile operator not named AT&T will also be wanting to get hold of the Galaxy S8 Active. While we can not entirely rule out the idea of a Galaxy S8 Active being offered by other networks in the near future, it seems that AT&T holds exclusivity for now.
