For a while now, people speculated that Facebook could be doing something to improve its Messenger app. Today, the speculation was finally put to a rest since the team behind Facebook confirmed news that they were adding chatbot support to Messenger. Along with its announcement, they have given the name "Bots for Messenger" for the service.
On stage, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg demonstrated how the new update could revolutionize the way people use Messenger. With just a few messages to the chatbot, Zuckerberg was able to order flowers from 1-800-Flowers. Shortly after the request was sent, a CNN bot offered breaking news of the demo.
Considering the fact that there are 900 million monthly active users of the Messenger app, it is about time that this new feature is introduced. On a monthly basis, about 50 million businesses use the service with 1 billion messages being sent out. With the new update to the Messenger Platform, developers will be able to create bots for the app. Devs could add in special bubbles on the app using images, buttons or calls to action.
Head of Messenger David Marcus demoed the beta version of the platform using a spring shopping app that guided him through the process of buying new shoes. There was also a demo of a Poncho weather bot that gave out humorous weather updates. Additionally, Marcus demonstrated that users can block messages from bots whenever they do not want to use it anymore. Considering the fact that Facebook is open to the idea of allowing sponsored messages on the chatbots service, users have the option of muting or blocking messages they don't wish to receive. Facebook can earn money from advertisers who buy through the "Click to Message" function.
The beta version of the platform is said to go live today. With this, developers can already get started on the task of creating chatbots. For users who want to know whether the bots are available on their Messenger app, a persistent search bar will be visible on top of the app. Once the cursor is on the search field, bot suggestions will be auto populated depending on things that Messenger thinks you'll be interested in. By using the app, individuals no longer have to install an app or input a credit card number.
